Rear Admiral Hennie Bester SM MMM is a retired South African Navy officer who served as Flag Officer Fleet from 2005 to 2008, when he retired. [1]

Military career

He joined the Navy in 1968. [2] He served on a number of ships before joining the project to acquire Strike Craft in 1976, serving as weapons and operations officer from 1978 to 1979 before being appointed Squadron planning officer in 1980. From February 1981 to December 1982 he commanded the SAS Frans Erasmus. He served as Squadron Commander from 1987 to 1988 before being promoted Captain in November 1988 and appointed Commanding officer of the Strike Craft Flotilla. [3]

He was appointed Director Naval Planning in 1994 and in 1998 he joined the Joint Operations Division as Director Force Employment and promoted to rear admiral (junior grade). He was appointed Director Maritime Warfare at Navy Office in February 2002 and promoted to rear admiral on 1 February 2005 and appointed Flag Officer Fleet. [3]

Anthony Neville Howell is a retired Rear Admiral of the South African Navy. After completing school at Fish Hoek High School in 1964, he joined the Navy in 1965. He trained at the Naval Gymnasium in Saldanha and Naval College. He completed a B. Mil degree at the South African Military Academy in 1968 and then volunteered for submarines. He was Communications Officer on the SAS Maria van Riebeeck, and served in SAS Emily Hobhouse as Detection and Weapons Officer, First Lieutenant. He commanded the submarine SAS Maria van Riebeeck from 1970-1980. From 1981 to 1983. Director Naval Personnel Plans at Naval HQ during 1986-1989. He was the Officer Commanding South African Naval College from 1989 to 1992. In 1993 he was promoted to Commodore and appointed Chief of Naval Staff Plans. In 1998 he was appointed Director Naval Acquisition before being promoted to rear admiral on 1 April 1999 with appointment as Chief Director Maritime Warfare. He retired from the Navy on 31 July 2001
