Henry Haslett

Henry Haslett (Died 8 November 1916 at Bexley) [1] was one of the small group who met regularly at the Rev. Stainforth's Rectory that formed the nucleus from which The Philatelic Society, London, subsequently The Royal Philatelic Society London, was formed (although Haslett was never a member of that organisation). [2] He may therefore be called one of the first philatelists.

Francis Stainforth British philatelist

The Reverend Francis John Stainforth was an early British philatelist, conchologist, and book collector. He was the Perpetual Curate of All Hallows Staining church in London, where Mount Brown compiled large parts of his catalogue. The church was believed to be the one mentioned by Charles Dickens in Dombey & Son.

Royal Philatelic Society London philatelic society

The Royal Philatelic Society London (RPSL) is the oldest philatelic society in the world. It was founded on 10 April 1869 as The Philatelic Society, London. The society runs a postal museum, the Museum of Philatelic History, at its Devonshire Place headquarters in London.

Part collector, part dealer, stamps acquired by Haslett subsequently found their way into the Tapling Collection, which is now part of the British Library Philatelic Collections, and the collection of William Image. Notable stamps acquired by Haslett included Sydney Views and other old colonial stamps. He also acquired early German stamped envelopes. [1]

Tapling Collection

The Tapling Collection of postage stamps was donated to the British Museum from the estate of Thomas Tapling in 1891.

British Library Philatelic Collections

The British Library Philatelic Collections is the national philatelic collection of the United Kingdom with over 8 million items from around the world. It was established in 1891 as part of the British Museum Library, later to become the British Library, with the collection of Thomas Tapling. In addition to bequests and continuing donations, the library received consistent deposits by the Crown Agency and has become a primary research collection for British Empire and international history. The collections contain a wide range of artefacts in addition to postage stamps, from newspaper stamps to a press used to print the first British postage stamps.

The International Philatelic Union, formed 1881, was an early international philatelic organisation formed for the study of stamps and the promotion of philately generally. Its office was located in London. The society survived to see its jubilee in 1931, and an exhibition was held to celebrate the fact, but its later history is unclear.

Mount Brown (philatelist) British philatelist

Mount Brown (1837-1919) was an early British philatelist and the compiler of only the second published stamp catalogue in the English language. Brown attended the City of London School and started to collect stamps in around 1860.

William Wilmot Corfield was a British philatelist who was an important figure in Anglo-Indian philately. By his own account, he was an auditor by profession.

Lionel Edward Dawson was a philatelist who won the Crawford Medal from the Royal Philatelic Society London for his work on The One Anna and Two Annas Postage Stamps of India, 1854-55. He was an expert on the stamps of India and the Feudatory States and signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1961.

Alphonse Marie Tracey Woodward was a philatelist who was a specialist in the stamps of Japan. In 1929, he was awarded the Crawford Medal by the Royal Philatelic Society London for his work The postage stamps of Japan and dependencies. He was also awarded the Lindenberg Medal.
