Northwest Territories Territory of Canada

The Northwest Territories is a federal territory of Canada. At a land area of approximately 1,144,000 km2 (442,000 sq mi) and a 2016 census population of 41,786, it is the second-largest and the most populous of the three territories in Northern Canada. Its estimated population as of 2019 is 44,826. Yellowknife became the territorial capital in 1967, following recommendations by the Carrothers Commission.

Political career

Zoe was first elected to the Northwest Legislature in the 1987 Northwest Territories general election in the North Slave riding. He ran for re-election in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election defeating 2 other candidates to win his second term in office. Zoe did run when the Legislature dissolved in 1995. Zoe ran for re-election in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election but was defeated by Leon Lafferty. Zoe would run again in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election this time defeating Lafferty.

The 1987 Northwest Territories general election was the 16th general election in the history of the Northwest Territories, Canada. The election took place on October 5, 1987.

The 1991 Northwest Territories general election was the 17th general election in the Northwest Territories history. The election took place on October 15, 1991.

The 1999 Northwest Territories general election took place on December 6, 1999, and was the 19th general election in the history of the Northwest Territories, Canada. This was the first election under the new boundaries that were created when Nunavut was carved out of the Northwest Territories. 19 members were elected, five fewer than in the previous election.

Third term

After winning re-election to his third term in 1999, Zoe was appointed by Premier Joe Handley to the cabinet as Minister of Municipal Affairs and Community development. Zoe became mired in scandal on May 15, 2004 after a night of drinking at the Royal Canadian Legion in Yellowknife, when he was overheard making derogatory comments about Newfoundlanders. [1] Premier Handley stripped him of his portfolios becoming a Minister Without Portfolio on May 29, 2004. after being pressured by repeated calls for Handley to revoke his portfolios. [2] The legislature removed his as cabinet minister in a vote of no confidence on May 31, 2004. [1]

Royal Canadian Legion organization

The Royal Canadian Legion is a non-profit Canadian ex-service organization founded in 1925. Membership includes people who have served as military, Royal Canadian Mounted Police, provincial and municipal police, Royal Canadian Air, Army and Sea Cadets, direct relatives of members and also affiliated members. Membership is now also open to the general public.

Zoe was defeated in the 2007 Northwest Territories general election. He collected approximately 46% against the incumbent, Jackson Lafferty in the electoral district of Monfwi. [5] [6]

The 2007 Northwest Territories general election took place on October 1, 2007. It was the 21st in the history of the Northwest Territories of Canada. Nineteen members were elected to the Legislative Assembly from single member districts conducted under first-past-the-post voting system.
