Herne Hill Harriers

The Herne Hill Harriers is an amateur athletics sports club based at Tooting Bec Athletics Track in Tooting Bec, London. The club was founded in the Herne Hill district of London in 1889. [1] The club caters to all levels and ages of track, field, road running and cross-country running. The club begins training athletes at age 11 and offers “Star Track” an opportunity for younger children to get involved at the end of July each year. [2]

Leagues

Herne Hill Harriers athletes are involved in a number of different leagues and competitions. The men's track and field team competes in the second and third division of the Southern men's league as well as the Rosenheim league involving other local clubs. The women's track and field team competes in the UK women's athletics league while younger athletes compete as a part of the National young athletes league as well as the Ebbisham and Lily B Leagues.

The club's cross-country athletes compete in the Surrey and East Surrey Cross Country Leagues each season as well as the South of Thames, Surrey, South of England and National Cross Country championships Road Runners at Herne Hill Harriers compete annually in the Surrey, South of England and National 6-stage Road relays in the autumn and in the longer 12-stage road relays in the spring as well as participating in the Surrey Road League over the summer months [3]

Notable athletes

Former Olympians and European champions in athletics have run for the club including Olympic medalists Joe Deakin, David Jacobs, Herbert Johnston, Ernest Webb and Thomas Humphreys, as well as Harry Green, another Olympian who held a world best in the marathon, as well as Michael Maynard, part of the historic England Team that took gold at the 1957 International Cross Country Championships in San Sebastián, Spain. Kajsa Margareta Bergqvist is a Swedish former high jumper. She won one bronze medal in the Olympic Games, one gold and two bronze medals in the World Championships in Athletics and one gold and one bronze in the European Championships. Her personal outdoor record of 2.06 m, set in Germany in 2003, is also a Swedish record. Her indoor record of 2.08 m, set at the Hochsprung mit Musik meeting in 2006, is the world indoor record.

Ranelagh Harriers is a road running and cross-country club based in Petersham, Richmond, south-west London, England. The headquarters are its clubhouse, which is behind The Dysart restaurant and right next to Richmond Park, allowing plenty of opportunity for off-road running. Ranelagh athletes compete in many events from the 5k to ultramarathons on a variety of terrains, and in the Surrey Road League and the Surrey Cross Country League.

Thames Valley Harriers (TVH) is an athletics club founded in 1887. It is based at the Linford Christie Stadium, in West London, England, which is named after member and Olympic 100 metres gold medallist Linford Christie.

Ernest James Webb was a British athlete who competed mainly in the 10-mile walk. He was born in Hackney and died in Toronto. Webb competed for the Herne Hill Harriers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ernest Glover (athlete)</span> British long-distance runner

Ernest Glover was a British athlete who competed in the 5,000 metres, the 10,000 metres, and in cross country at the 1912 Summer Olympics held in Stockholm, Sweden. Glover's 16th place in the individual cross country event helped him to earn a bronze medal with teammates Frederick Hibbins and Thomas Humphreys in the team competition. Although he qualified for the 5,000 m and 10,000 m finals, he withdrew from both.

Thomas Frederick Humphreys was a British athlete who competed mainly in the cross country running team. He was born in Wingrave, Buckinghamshire and died in Aston Abbotts. He was affiliated with Herne Hill Harriers.

Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club, formed in 1882 as Roath (Cardiff) Harriers, is an athletics club based at the Cardiff International Sports Stadium, Cardiff. The club began as a cross country club, the first athletics only club in Wales. Roath Harriers runners became individual and team champions of the first Welsh Cross Country Championships, held on 7 March 1894. Roath Harriers shared Maindy Stadium with Birchgrove Harriers from its opening in 1951 and the two clubs amalgamated to form Cardiff Amateur Athletic Club in 1968. Cardiff were British Athletics League champions in 1973, 1974, and 1975 and remain one of the top twelve clubs in Britain.

Athletics has a long history in Wales, with many events recognised today codified during the Victorian period. The first amateur athletic clubs in Wales were formed in the 1870s, while the first championships began in the early 20th century. Henry Roy Fowler was an English long-distance runner who competed mainly in track and cross country running competition. His greatest achievement was a gold medal at the International Cross Country Championships in 1963. He won five other medals at that competition, including an individual bronze in 1968 and team gold medals with England in 1966 and 1968.
