Hero of Albania, more properly Hero of the People (Albanian : Hero i Popullit) is the highest title that can be bestowed on a citizen of Albania.
Albanian is an Indo-European language spoken by the Albanians in the Balkans and the Albanian diaspora in the Americas, Europe and Oceania. It comprises an independent branch within the Indo-European languages and is not closely related to any other language in Europe.
The title was created in 1945 [1] and the Albanian parliament confirmed it by Law in 1954 and then reconfirmed by Law Nr.6133 on February 12, 1980. The creation of the award was a way to honor Albanian citizens for having made valuable contributions to Albania or to the Albanian people. [2]
The Albanians are an ethnic group native to the Balkan Peninsula and are identified by a common Albanian ancestry, culture, history and language. They primarily live in Albania, Kosovo, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia as well as in Croatia, Greece and Italy. They also constitute a diaspora with several communities established in the Americas, Europe and Oceania.
Abdyl Shemsedin Frashëri or Abdullah-Hysni Dume bej Frashëri was a prominent Hero of Albania. Frashëri was an Albanian academic, statesman, diplomat, and politician in the Ottoman Empire. During his lifetime Frashëri endeavoured to instill among Albanians patriotism and a strong identity while promoting a reform program based on Albanian language education and literature. He is one of the first Albanian political ideologues of the Albanian National Awakening being an initiator and prominent Leader of Albanian League of Prizren. He distinguished himself as a political personality from the 1860s through early political assignments. He founded the Central Committee for Defending Albanian Rights in Istanbul. He furthermore served as a deputy representative for the Yanya Vilayet in the Ottoman Parliament during the First Constitutional Era, 1876–1877.
Ali Demi was an Albanian hero of World War II and a communist, born in Filiates, Çamëri in 1918. He was killed in battle fighting German forces in Vlora, Albania in 1943.

Hero of Socialist Labour was an honorary title in Albania and other Warsaw Pact countries. It was the highest degree of distinction for exceptional achievements in national economy and culture. It provided a similar status to the title People's Hero of Albania that was awarded for heroic deeds, but unlike the latter, was awarded to citizens who contributed to the development of Albania's industry, agriculture, transportation, trade, science and technology and promoted the might and the glory of Albania.

The history of Albania forms a part of the history of Europe. During the classical times, Albania was home to several Illyrian tribes such as the Ardiaei, Albanoi, Amantini, Enchele, Taulantii and many others, but also Thracian and Greek tribes, as well as several Greek colonies established on the Illyrian coast. In the 3rd century BC, the area was annexed by Rome and became part of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia, Macedonia and Moesia Superior. Afterwards, the territory remained under Roman and Byzantine control until the Slavic migrations of the 7th century. It was integrated into the Bulgarian Empire in the 9th century.
