High Rise was a Japanese noise rock band from Tokyo, formed in 1982. The core of the band has consisted of bassist Asahito Nanjo and guitarist Munehiro Narita. [1] The group named themselves after the 1975 novel High Rise by J. G. Ballard. Their music draws from psychedelic music, free jazz and improvisational music. [2]
High Rise were originally performing under the name Psychedelic Speed Freaks and contained members Masashi Mitani, Asahito Nanjo, Munehiro Narita, and Ikuro Takahashi. They decided to change their name at the advice of P.S.F. Records, which claimed Psychedelic Speed Freaks sounded "too direct". [2]

P.S.F. Records is a Japanese record label specialising in underground psychedelic and folk music, and free improvisation. The label was established in Tokyo by Hideo Ikeezumi (1949-2017) (生悦住英夫) with the philosophy "I only release to what I like, and I hope that some of these sounds will appeal to the more discerning listener". It is named after its first release, the 1984 High Rise record Psychedelic Speed Freaks. P.S.F. is linked to a Tokyo record store, Modern Music, and a Japanese-language underground music magazine called G-Modern.
Kousokuya is a Japanese dark psychedelic rock band. This rock outfit, founded by guitarist Jutok Kaneko in the late 1970s, has released only a handful of recordings internationally, and scant more in their local Tokyo underground scene.
Asahito Nanjo (南條麻人) is a Japanese underground musician, best known for his psychedelic rock groups High Rise, Mainliner and Musica Transonic, and the ethnic improvisation unit Toho Sara. He has been active on the Tokyo underground scene since the late seventies.
Fractal Records is an independent French label created in September 1994, eclectic, focused on rock music, jazz, psychedelic, modern, avant-garde, free, punk, experimental, and especially that of Japan. Mainliner are a noise rock band from Tokyo, Japan. The band was formed in 1995 by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and bassist Asahito Nanjo with the intention of creating a new form of psychedelic music. They released four studio albums before the members went on hiatus to pursue other musical interests. On December 20, 2011, Kawabata Makoto, Koji Shimura and newcomer Kawabe Taigen began recording material. The music from these sessions was released on May 13, 2013, on the new album Revelation Space. The band intended to take part in a world tour in support of the new album, starting with the UK that September.
