Highway 222 [1] is a highway of northeastern Thailand. It begins at Phang Khon in Sakhon Nakhon Province at 17°23′20″N103°43′17″E / 17.38889°N 103.72139°E , where it meets Highway 227 and Highway 22 and ends near the Mekong River on the Lao border in the north at Bueng Kan in Bueng Kan Province at 18°21′39″N103°38′47″E / 18.36083°N 103.64639°E , where it joins Highway 212. Nong Khai province was formerly the northernmost of the northeastern (Isan) provinces (changwat) of Thailand until its eight eastern districts were split off to form Thailand's newest province, Bueng Kan province, in 2011. Nong Khai province lies in upper northeastern Thailand. Nearby provinces are : Bueng Kan, Sakon Nakhon, Udon Thani, and Loei. To the north it borders Vientiane province, Vientiane Prefecture, and Bolikhamsai province of Laos.

The Fifth Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge is a proposed highway bridge over the Mekong River that links the Bueng Kan Province of Thailand and Pakxan town, Bolikhamxai Province in Laos. The project includes a 16 km four-lane road, namely a 12 km Highway 244 at Bueng Kan district, the 1.3 km Mekong Bridge Proper (two-lane) and a 2.8 km road in Laos.
