History

Hiive was founded in 2021 by Sim Desai, Sarah Huggins, Stuart Eccles, and Prab Rattan. [1] Desai and Rattan previously worked at Setter Capital, an investment bank focused on private equity secondaries. [3] Huggins serves as the company's chief operating officer and general counsel, and Eccles is chief product and technology officer. [4]

Hiive began a beta release in May 2022 and launched in the United States in July 2022 following regulatory approval. It expanded to Canada in May 2023 after registering as an exempt market dealer in multiple provinces. [5]

In October 2023, Hiive raised C$5.7 million (approximately US$4.2 million) in a Series A round at a reported post-money valuation of US$77 million. [2] The round was led by Uncorrelated Ventures, with participation from Splash Capital, Harmony Venture Partners, Hack VC, Agmen Capital, and LendingClub co-founder Renaud Laplanche. [1] In October 2024, Hiive exceeded $1 billion in completed transactions on its platform. [6]

In November 2025, Bloomberg reported that Hiive was seeking Series B financing at a $650 million pre-money valuation and that it had listed itself on its own platform as part of that effort. [7] It also reported that the company had reached profitability and completed $930 million in transactions during 2024. [8]

Regulatory status

Hiive operates through Hiive Markets Limited, which received SEC registration and FINRA membership approval on April 22, 2022. [9] The company operates as an SEC-registered alternative trading system and is a member of the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC). [10] Hiive has obtained state registrations across 53 U.S. states and territories. [9]

In Canada, the company is registered as an exempt market dealer with securities commissions in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Québec, and Nova Scotia. [11]

Market

Hiive operates in the private secondary market, where platforms facilitate purchases and sales of shares in privately held companies. [12] It operates an order book displaying bids and asks. [13]

In 2025, the private secondary platforms space underwent consolidation. Charles Schwab announced its acquisition of Forge Global for $660 million in November 2025, and Morgan Stanley announced its acquisition of EquityZen in October 2025. [7] [14]
