Kudakwashe Hilton Davies Mudariki (born 8 April 1992 in Harare Zimbabwe) is the captain of the Zimbabwe national rugby union team (The Sables) and is recognized as the most successful captain in the team's history. Notably, he led the Sables to a historic qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, ending a 34-year absence from the tournament. Under his leadership, the team achieved significant victories, including a win over Namibia after an 11-year drought and the title of champions in the 2024 Rugby Africa Cup. [1] Mudariki also captained the Zimbabwe national 7s team (The Cheetahs) from 2015 to 2018 [2] . With over a decade of achievements, including multiple triumphs in the African Cup and Victoria Cup, he is a respected figure in rugby both in Zimbabwe and internationally. [3]

Early life

Educated at The Heritage and St John’s Prep then at Michaelhouse in KwaZulu-Natal, where he played for their First XV side in 2009 and 2010.

He represented the Sharks at the Under 18 Craven Week where he signed a contract with Western Province. In 2011 he represented Western Province in the Under 19 Currie Cup.

Rugby career

Hilton Mudariki began his rugby journey by representing Zimbabwe Under 20 in the Junior World Trophy held in Georgia. He made his senior debut for the Zimbabwe national rugby team (The Sables) in 2013 against Namibia in Windhoek. That same year, he also debuted in the HSBC World Series at the Port Elizabeth 7s.

From 2015 to 2017, Mudariki showcased his skills while representing the University of Johannesburg in the Varsity Cup, where his outstanding performances earned him a professional contract with Jersey Reds RFC in the English Championship. [4]

In 2019, he was appointed captain of the Sables, becoming a central figure in the revival of Zimbabwean rugby. As of July 2025, Mudariki has earned 55 international caps, leading the team in 26 matches over a seven-year period. His tenure as captain is characterized by consistent performance, strategic leadership, and a renewed sense of belief within the national team, solidifying his status as a key player in Zimbabwean rugby history.

Rugby World Cup Qualification (2027): In one of the most significant achievements in Zimbabwean rugby history, Mudariki led the Sables to victory in the Rugby Africa Cup, securing qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup for the first time since 1991. [5]

Winning Record and Leadership Impact: Under Mudariki’s leadership, Zimbabwe recorded a 13-match winning streak and won 22 of the 26 matches he captained — an 84.6% win rate [6] . His calm and composed presence, particularly during high-pressure matches such as the final against Namibia, has drawn praise from fans, analysts, and the media. [7]

Outside of rugby, Hilton Mudariki is deeply involved in philanthropic initiatives focused on youth development and community upliftment in Zimbabwe. Mudariki has championed access to rugby for young people in underserved communities, helping supply equipment, coaching, and mentorship. His efforts aim to use sport as a tool for empowerment, discipline, and social development.

In addition to his philanthropic work, Mudariki is keen to put himself out there and collaborate with brands that resonate with him, particularly in the fashion and lifestyle sectors.
