Khatumo State, officially the Khatumo State of Somalia, was a successor to the SSC Movement. Centred on the Sool, Sanaag regions and the Buuhoodle district of Togdheer region, its leaders declared the territory an autonomous state in 2012. By 2015 the state ceased to function and on 20 October 2017 in Aynaba, an agreement was signed between Khatumo President and the Somaliland government which stipulated the amendment of Somaliland's constitution and to re-integrate the territory into Somaliland. However, Vice President Khatumo expressed his disagreement with the agreement and remains actively opposed to Somaliland.

Tukaraq is a small village in the eastern Sool region of Somaliland. The town is located on the road between Las Anod and Garowe in Las Anod District. Somaliland has effective control there since 2018, but Puntland also has a territorial claim.

The Somaliland National Army, is the land force and largest branch of the Somaliland Armed Forces is based in the Somaliland capital of Hargeisa. There are approximately 100,000 active members and additional 4,000 in reserves. The Somaliland National Army is composed entirely of professionals and volunteers due to the army not being mandatory of conscription. Some Somaliland battalions operate near the Puntland border due to a border dispute.

Cayn or Ayn is an administrative region that Puntland declared to be founded in the 2000s. However, the administrative division of Somaliland defines it as Buhoodle District in Togdheer, and Somaliland effectively controls it with the exception of Buhoodle and some other parts. It is bordered by Togdheer to the west, Sool to the east, and Ethiopia to the south. Its capital is Buuhoodle. As an intra-46th meridian east territory, Buuhoodle has a tradition of being external to European colonial rule or convention.
