Hlomela Bucwa is a South African politician, a member of the Democratic Alliance. In 2016 she became the youngest member of parliament in South Africa. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Education

She attended the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) and is known to have studied Law but she did not graduate. In 2015, she was the Student Representative Council (SRC) president of the university, the first female to be elected as president of the council. [1] [6] [2] [3] [7]

Career

She began her career in politics while in the university but became actively involved in 2011 as an activist for the Democratic Alliance Student Association. After joining the school's SRC in 2014, she became president in 2016 and served on the university’s highest decision-making body, the NMMU Council. [8] In August 2016, she was among three candidates selected to represent the Democratic Alliance in contesting for a seat in the National Assembly. She was sworn into parliament in November 2016 and she became the Baby of the House taking over the title from Yusuf Cassim. [6] [2] [5] During her term of office at the National Assembly, she was a member of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training. [9]

FeesMustFall Student Movement

#FeesMustFall was a student-led protest movement that began in mid-October 2015 in South Africa. The goals of the movement were to stop increases in student fees as well as to increase government funding of universities. The movements were started and led by the SRC leader of the University of Witwatersrand of 2015, Shaeera Kalla. On 2 October Kalla attended her last council meeting as SRC president, she is accompanied by Nompendulo as an observer heading towards being the incoming SRC President of 2016. Protests started at the University of Witwatersrand and spread to the University of Cape Town and Rhodes University before rapidly spreading to other universities across the country.

2019 South African general election

The 2019 South African general election was held on 8 May 2019 to elect a new President, National Assembly and provincial legislatures in each province. These were the sixth elections held since the end of apartheid in 1994 and determined who would become the next President of South Africa.

Phumzile Van Damme is a South African politician and Member of the Parliament of South Africa representing South Africa’s official opposition, the Democratic Alliance. She was first elected at the 2014 South African general election and re-elected in 2019. Ronald Lamola South African lawyer and politician

Ronald Ozzy Lamola is a South African lawyer and politician, Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, and a member of the African National Congress (ANC). He has also been serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 22 May 2019. He is a member of the ANC's National Executive Committee and National Working Committee. Lamola had previously been involved in the African National Congress Youth League.

Naledi Nokukhanya Chirwa is a South African feminist, legislator and former student activist serving as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa. A member of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), she was sworn in as an MP on 22 May 2019. She is one of the youngest MPs of the 6th Parliament. Chirwa was involved in the #FeesMustFall student protests that occurred at the University of Pretoria between 2015 and 2016.

Wendy Felecia Philander is a South African politician serving as a Member of the Western Cape Provincial Parliament since August 2018. She is the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Health. She was previously a Member of the Mayoral Committee of the Drakenstein Local Municipality. Philander is a member of the Democratic Alliance.

Karabo Lerato Khakhau is a South African politician serving as a Member of the Free State Provincial Legislature for the Democratic Alliance since May 2019. Aged 21 years at the time of her election, she became the youngest ever member of the provincial legislature. Michael Bagraim is a South African politician and labour lawyer. A member of the Democratic Alliance, he was elected to the National Assembly in 2014. He was then appointed Shadow Deputy Minister of Labour. In 2017, Bagraim was promoted to Shadow Minister of Labour. After the 2019 election, he was made Shadow Deputy Minister of Labour and Employment.
