The Hockey Diversity Alliance is a group of current and former National Hockey League players aiming to fight racism in ice hockey.

History

The Alliance was founded in June 2020, with Akim Aliu and Evander Kane acting as co-heads. [1] [2] [3]

In August 2020, the Alliance announced a set of actions for the NHL to tackle racism in the league, including increasing the number of Black executives within the league, mandatory anti-racism training for all league employees, and financial support for social justice initiatives. [4] The Alliance had successfully called for the league to suspend games following the Shooting of Jacob Blake. [5]

In September 2020, the NHL and the NHLPA announced a partnership with the Alliance to create a grassroots hockey development programme aimed toward young players of colour in the Toronto area. [6] [7] Later that month, after being named to the board of the PWHPA, Canadian Olympian Sarah Nurse stated that while she has had some conversations with the Alliance, she was "disappointed that there hasn't been female representation, not only on the board, but really in any of it." [8]

In October 2020, the Alliance announced that it was cutting formal ties with the NHL over the league's failure to make any concrete commitments or actions. [9]

In January 2022, the Alliance launched its #TapeOutHate campaign. Partnered with Budweiser Canada, the video accompanying the campaign brings attention to racist incidents players have had to endure. [10]

The NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) is the basic contract between the National Hockey League (NHL) and the NHL Players' Association (NHLPA), designed to be arrived at through the typical labour–management negotiations of collective bargaining. On January 6, 2013, an agreement was tentatively reached after a labour dispute cancelled 510 regular season games of the 2012–13 season, and was ratified by the league's Board of Governors on January 9, 2013, as well as by the NHLPA membership three days later on January 12, 2013. As originally signed, the 2013 CBA was a 10-year deal, longest in NHL history, expiring after the 2021–22 season. On July 10, 2020, the NHL and NHLPA announced the extension of the CBA through the 2025–26 NHL season.

Akim Aliu is a Nigeria-born Canadian-Ukrainian former professional ice hockey player. He last played for HC Litvínov in the Czech Extraliga (ELH). Aliu was a second round selection of the Chicago Blackhawks, 56th overall, in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft and has played for several AHL and ECHL teams in both the Blackhawks and Atlanta Thrashers/Winnipeg Jets organizations before a trade to the Calgary Flames. Aliu made his NHL debut on April 5, 2012.

Evander Frank Kane is a Canadian professional ice hockey left winger for the Edmonton Oilers of the National Hockey League (NHL). He has previously played for the Atlanta Thrashers, Winnipeg Jets, Buffalo Sabres, and San Jose Sharks. Kane was selected fourth overall by the Thrashers in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Nazem Kadri is a Canadian professional ice hockey player for the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs seventh overall in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He played his junior career in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), first with the Kitchener Rangers and then the London Knights. He won the J. Ross Robertson Cup with Kitchener and was part of the Rangers team that lost to the Spokane Chiefs in the final of the 2008 Memorial Cup. Kadri has also represented Canada internationally at the 2010 World Junior Championships, where the team received the silver medal after losing the final to the United States 6–5.

The Professional Women's Hockey Players Association (PWHPA) is a nonprofit 501(c)(6) organization dedicated to advocating for the promotion of professional women's ice hockey. It was founded in May 2019 following the dissolution of the Canadian Women's Hockey League, which only paid stipends, and player's dissatisfaction in the operations of the National Women's Hockey League. Their goal is to create a sustainable professional league for women's ice hockey in North America.
