History

The first hockey team in Geelong was founded in 1954, traveling to Melbourne to compete on a weekly basis. The Geelong Men's Hockey Association was then formed in 1966, providing for local competition since then.

The association plays most of its matches on the synthetic pitch at Stead Park, Corio. Until 1992 Stead Park consisted only of grass fields, but in that year a sand-based synthetic turf was installed and stage 1 of the clubrooms constructed in their current locations. In 2008 this pitch was replaced with a hybrid (wet-dry) pitch. The Stead Park Master Plan (endorsed by the City of Greater Geelong on 28 January 2010 [1] ) recommends the construction of a second synthetic pitch alongside the current one.

The facility at Stead Park was named the "Jim Kirk Pitch" in 2008 to honour the past president who was instrumental in the provision of both the 1992 and 2008 synthetic surfaces. The southern end of the ground is named the "Climpson Family End" and the northern is the "Burns Family End" in honour of two of the largest and most successful Geelong hockey families.

Awards

The association has a number of annual awards issued to members who demonstrate particular significance to Hockey Geelong as a whole. These include

Field hockey Team sport played with sticks and a spherical ball

Field hockey is a team sport structured in standard hockey format; in which each team plays with ten outfield players and a goalkeeper. Matches are played on grass, watered turf, artificial turf, synthetic field, or indoor boarded surface. Players wear a standard kit consisting of jersey, shorts or skirt, shoes and, for safety, shin guards and a mouthguard. Each player carries a hockey stick which is made of wood, carbon fibre, fibreglass, or a combination of carbon fibre and fibreglass in different quantities. Using their sticks, the team endeavours to drive the round hockey ball, made of hard plastic, towards the rival team's goal. The stick has two sides; one rounded and one flat. Only the flat face of the stick is allowed to progress the ball. During play, goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with any part of their body. A player's hand is considered part of the stick if holding the stick. If the ball is "played" with the rounded part of the stick, it will result in a penalty. Goalkeepers often have a different design of stick; they also cannot play the ball with the round side of their stick. The match is won by the team that scores the most goals.

Victorian Football League Australian rules football league

The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football league in Australia serving as one of the second-tier regional semi-professional competitions which sit underneath the fully professional Australian Football League (AFL). It includes teams from clubs based in the eastern states of Australia: Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, and includes reserves teams for the east coast AFL clubs.

In team sport, a player of the match or man of the match award is often given to the outstanding player in a particular match. This can be a player from either team, although the player is generally chosen from the winning team.

An umpire in field hockey is a person with the authority to make decisions on a hockey pitch in accordance with the rules of the game. Each match is controlled by two such umpires. In theory they are responsible for decisions taken on their respective half of the field, but practically they 'control' on either diagonal half of the field. In many higher-level events, a reserve umpire is appointed in addition to the two field umpires to act as a back-up in the event of injury or other issue preventing a field umpire from commencing or continuing a match. In World-Level competitions, a video umpire is also appointed in addition to the field and reserve umpires.
