Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Muzaffarpur (Cancer Hospital Muzaffarpur) is a tertiary cancer care, education, and research institution located in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India. It is a constituent unit of the Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) and operates under the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. The hospital was established to address the growing cancer burden in Bihar and neighbouring regions and is recognised as Bihar’s first comprehensive cancer super-speciality hospital. [1]

Background

HBCH&RC Muzaffarpur was established in 2018 as part of Tata Memorial Centre’s national expansion programme to decentralise cancer care services in underserved regions. It serves patients from Bihar and adjoining states, where access to specialised oncology services had been limited. [2]

The hospital is located within the campus of Sri Krishna Medical College and Hospital at Uma Nagar, Rasulpur Saidpur Bazid, Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

It is empanelled under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) and provides treatment at concessional rates for eligible patients. [3]

The Samparda Singh Memorial Radiotherapy Centre, funded by the Alkem Foundation (₹100 crore), houses advanced radiotherapy equipment including linear accelerators, CT simulators, brachytherapy units, and organ motion management systems. It is one of the largest radiotherapy facilities in North Bihar. [4]

Education and training

The hospital offers postgraduate, fellowship, and paramedical programmes in oncology to develop a skilled healthcare workforce.

Research

Engages in clinical and translational research, participating in clinical trials and population-based cancer registries coordinated by Tata Memorial Centre.

Role in regional healthcare

Serves as a major referral centre for North Bihar and surrounding regions. Conducts outreach programmes, cancer awareness campaigns, and early detection screening.
