Honey & Hot Wax is an anthology of live action role-playing games on the theme of sex and sexuality, published by Pelgrane Press in 2020. [1] It includes games by Sharang Biswas (co-editor), Yeonsoo Julian Kim, Julia Bond Ellingboe, Kat Jones, Lucian Kahn (co-editor), Jonaya Kemper, Will Morningstar, Alex Roberts, and Susanne. It also has a foreword by Naomi Clark, academic chair of NYU Game Center, [2] and a chapter on consent by Maury Brown.

Awards and Grants

In 2020-2021, Honey & Hot Wax was nominated for an IndieCade award [3] and an Indie Game Developer Network award for "Game of the Year." [4] The collection received 2 grants from the Effing Foundation for Sex Positivity, a nonprofit organization for reducing sexual shame through art and education. [5] [6]

Scholarship

In Nordic Erotic Larp: Designing for Sexual Arousal, game scholars Hanne Grasmo and Jaakko Stenros discuss Follow My Lead by Susanne for its use of non-verbal game mechanics through abstracted actions, examples of play, erotic engagement, power play, loosely scripted scenes, and gender inclusion. [7]

Author Cecilia Tan called Honey & Hot Waxa fabulous collection of ‘let's pretend’ games.” [8] Banana Chan for Dicebreaker listed the collection among her favorite games of 2020. [9]

Performances

Honey & Hot Wax's game Pass the Sugar, Please by Yeonsoo Julian Kim was staged in Salem, Massachusetts as an immersive theater production by Intramersive, both in-person and virtually. [10] [11] Kathryn Yu for No Proscenium called it "the standout this year" for immersive theatre productions "in its earnest urging for us to be honest and open about our pleasures and pains". [12]

Publications

In the year following publication, Honey & Hot Wax co-editor Sharang Biswas and contributor Yeonsoo Julian Kim co-edited its "spiritual successor" Strange Lusts, an online anthology of interactive fiction about sex and sexuality. [13] Strange Lusts was published in 2021 by Strange Horizons. [14] In addition to work by Biswas and Kim, it includes pieces by Anna Anthropy, Nibedita Sen, and Natalia Theodoridou.

Biswas also wrote the chapter "Sex and Game Design (Part 2): Mechanics and Verbs" in the book Passion and Play: A Guide to Designing Sexual Content in Games by Michelle Clough. [15]

An eroge is a Japanese genre of erotic video game. The term encompasses a wide variety of Japanese games containing erotic content across multiple genres. The first eroge were created in the 1980s, and many well-known companies in the Japanese gaming industry originally produced and distributed them. Some eroge are primarily focused on erotic content, while others, such as Key's Kanon, only contain occasional scenes in an otherwise non-erotic work. Games in the latter category are often re-released with sexual content removed for general audiences. Throughout its history, the genre has faced controversy for its use of explicit sexual content, and as a result has been banned from several console platforms.

The Diana Jones Award is an annual award for "excellence in gaming". The original award was made from a burned book encased in lucite. The award is unusual in two ways: first, it is not an award for a specific class of thing, but can be awarded to a person, product, publication, company, organization, event or trend – anything related to gaming; second, it does not count popularity or commercial success as a sign of "excellence". The award was first presented in 2001.

Video games featuring sexual content has been found since the early days of the industry and can be found on most platforms and can be of any video game genre.

David Vincent Baker is a designer and theorist of tabletop role-playing games and the owner of indie role-playing games publisher Lumpley Games, which also hosts the archives of The Forge. He and his wife Meguey Baker designed Apocalypse World, the first game in the Powered by the Apocalypse system. Apocalypse World won Game of the Year, Best Support, and Most Innovative game at the 2010 Indie RPG Awards, and was 2011 RPG of the Year at both the Golden Geek Awards and Lucca Comics & Games. Bluebeard's Bride is a gothic horror tabletop role-playing game based on the Bluebeard folktale. It was designed and written by Whitney "Strix" Beltrán, Marissa Kelly, and Sarah Richardson, and published by Magpie Games in 2017. Players represent five aspects of a woman's mind as she explores the mansion of her frightening new husband.

Jiangshi: Blood in the Banquet Hall is a tabletop role-playing game about Chinese immigrants to North America managing a family restaurant while battling Jiangshi, legendary hopping vampires. The game was designed by Banana Chan and Sen-Foong Lim, who are both Chinese immigrants. It was published independently in 2021 after a Kickstarter campaign raised over US$100,000. The instructions focus heavily on authentic portrayals of Chinese history and immigrant experiences. The default scenario takes place in San Francisco's Chinatown during the 1920s, but the game box comes with a book of scenarios by a variety of writers offering more adventures in different cities and historical periods. The game's tone can range from serious to comedy horror. Themes include fighting racism, exploring intergenerational knowledge and relationships, coping with economic hardship, and working together as a family.

<i>Lust for Darkness</i> 2018 video game

Lust for Darkness is a 2018 horror game developed by Movie Games Lunarium and published by Movie Games. It is an erotic horror story inspired by Zdzisław Beksiński, H. R. Giger, and H. P. Lovecraft. It was originally released for Windows and macOS. SimFabric published it for Switch and PlayStation 4 in 2019 and 2020, respectively. A sequel, Lust from Beyond, was released in 2021.
