Hospital Caterers Association

The Hospital Caterers Association is an industry body in the United Kingdom for people and organisations involved in NHS Healthcare Catering Management established in 1948

It runs an annual award ceremony. [1]

It set up an annual Nutrition and Hydration Week, every March. In 2016 95% of NHS Trusts and more than 2,000 care homes participated. [2]

It supports efforts to reduce unhealthy food and drink supplies in the NHS. [3]

Andy Jones, a former Chair of the Association, challenged NHS Chief Executives to eat patients food for a week in 2016, so that they would have a better understanding of the challenges. [4]

Its Outstanding Service Award in 2020 went to Phil Shelley, who went on to be Chair of the NHS Review of Hospital Food. [5]

Sir David Nicholson is a public policy analyst and NHS Manager who is the Chair of Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and Chair of Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. He was previously the Chief Executive of the National Health Service in England. He was appointed in October 2011 following the NHS reforms, having been seventh Chief executive of the NHS within the Department of Health since September 2006. He issued what has become known as the "Nicholson challenge" regarding the finances of the NHS. He retired from the role on 1 April 2014 in the wake of the Stafford Hospital scandal.

Sir David Nigel Dalton is the interim chief executive of Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and previously Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust and Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust in northern England. Aseem Malhotra is a controversial British cardiologist, health campaigner, author, and, contrary to public health consensus, an anti-mRNA vaccine activist. He contends that people should reduce sugar in their diet, adopt a low-carb and high-fat diet, and reduce their use of prescription drugs. He was the first science director of Action on Sugar in 2014, was listed as one of The Sunday Times 500 most influential people in 2016, and was twice recognized as one of the top fifty black and minority ethnic community member pioneers in the UK's National Health Service by the Health Service Journal. Malhotra is co-author of a book called The Pioppi Diet.

The National Association of Care Catering is a trade association for catering in the British care sector. It is an unincorporated voluntary association based in offices in Faygate.

Food in UK hospitals has been the subject of attention from celebrity chefs. James Martin was tasked with revamping the menu and catering facilities at Scarborough General Hospital in September 2011, for Operation Hospital Food for the BBC. The show was recommissioned for a second and third series which were shown on BBC One in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Prue Leith is patron of Sustain's Campaign for Better Hospital Food and backed a new review of hospital food standards by Matt Hancock in August 2019.
