Hasan al-Askari Eleventh of the Twelve Shia Imams

Hasan ibn Ali ibn Muhammad, better known as Hasan al-Askari, was a descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad. He is regarded as the eleventh of the Twelve Imams, succeeding his father, Ali al-Hadi. Hasan Al-Askari was born in Medina in 844 and brought with his father to the garrison town of Samarra in 848, where the Abbasid caliphs held them under close surveillance until their deaths, even though neither were politically active. After the death of al-Hadi in 868, the majority of his following acknowledged his son, al-Askari, as their next Imam. Al-Askari's contact with the Shia population was restricted by the caliphs and instead he communicated with his followers through a network of representatives. He died in Samarra in 873-874 at the age of about twenty-eight and was buried in the family home next to his father, which later developed into al-Askari shrine, a major center for Shia pilgrimage. Shia sources commonly hold the Abbasids responsible for the death of al-Askari and his father. A well-known early Shia commentary of the Quran is attributed to al-Askari.

Muhammad al-Mahdi Twelfth and last Imam in Shia Twelver of Islam

Muhammad ibn Hasan ibn Ali, better known Muhammad al-Mahdi is believed by the Twelver Shia to be the Mahdi, an eschatological redeemer of Islam and the final Imam of the Twelve Imams who will emerge with Isa (Jesus) in order to fulfil their mission of bringing peace and justice to the world. Twelver Shias believe that al-Mahdi was born on 15th Sha'ban 869 CE/ 255 AH and assumed the Imamate at nearly four years of age following the killing of his father Hasan al-Askari. In the early years of his Imamah, he is believed to have had contact with his followers only through The Four Deputies. This period was known as the Minor Occultation and lasted from 874 to 941 CE. A few days before the death of his fourth deputy Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Samarri in 941, he is believed to have sent his followers a letter. In that letter, which was transmitted by al-Samarri, he declared the beginning of Major Occultation, during which Mahdi was not to be in contact with his followers directly, but had instructed them to follow the pious high clerics for whom he has mentioned some distinguishing merits.

Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Uthman was the second of the Four Deputies of the Minor Occultation after death of Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Asadi, his father and the first deputy. According to Twelver Shia Islam, the twelfth Imam, Hujjat-Allah al-Mahdi, appointed Abu Jafar as his second deputy. He was Imam al-Mahdi's deputy until from 257 AH until his death in 304 or 305 AH. After his death, Abul Qasim Husayn ibn Ruh al-Nawbakhti was appointed as the third deputy of Imam al-Mahdi.

Abu al-Qasim al-Husayn ibn Ruh Nawbakhti was the third of the Four Deputies appointed by the twelfth Imam of Twelver Shias, Hujjat-Allah al-Mahdi during the Minor Occultation. He was a native of Qum who migrated to Baghdad during the time of Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Asadi, the first deputy. Al‑Nawbakhti was a companion of the second deputy Abu Jafar Muhammad ibn Uthman and became his agent for several years. After the death of al-Nawbakhti, Abul Hasan Ali ibn Muhammad al-Samarri was appointed as the fourth deputy of Hujjat-Allah al-Mahdi.

The Four Deputies, also known as the Gates, the Sufara or the Wukala, were the four individuals in Twelver Shia Islam who served as messengers between the community and the Hujjat-Allah al-Mahdi, the twelfth and final Imam, upon his going into the Minor Occultation.

Occultation in Shīʿa Islam refers to the eschatological belief that the Mahdi, a cultivated male descendant of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, has already been born and subsequently went into occultation, from which he will one day emerge with Jesus (ʿĪsā) and establish global justice.
