Hyatt Regency Trinidad is a luxury, high-rise hotel situated along the waterfront of the capital city of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain.

The hotel is affiliated with the Hyatt Regency brand, part of the Hyatt Corporation based in Chicago, Illinois, US. The hotel's general manager since May 2024 is Michael Hooper. [1]

The hotel was announced in 2005 as a partnership between Hyatt, which manages the property, and UDeCOTT which is its owner and developer. [2] The builder/designer was Bouygues. The hotel opened in January 2008. [3] In 2011, Hyatt initiated an arbitration against the government of Trinidad and Tobago and withheld owner remittances after government actions left ownership of the hotel unclear. [4] The issue was resolved in 2014. [4]

In 2024, the Hyatt Regency announced that it would stop accepting Trinidad and Tobago dollars, the local currency, causing a controversy. [5] The hotel backtracked following public outcry. [6] In response, Colm Imbert, T&T's Minister of Finance announced that the ministry would investigate the hotel's attempt to avoid TT$. [7] [8] The hotel is owned by UDeCOTT. [9]

The Urban Development Corporation of Trinidad and Tobago (UDeCOTT), is a state owned company of Trinidad and Tobago. It was founded on December 28, 1994. It is carrying out construction projects that form Vision 2030, which is the plan created by the government, to achieve first world status, by the year 2030. The project is worth several billion dollars. In May 2008, the Trinidad and Tobago Institute of Architects called for an audit of UDeCOTT due to poor business practices.

The candidates for political leader were incumbent Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Team Star against former member of parliament for St. Augustine and former Minister of Trade, Industry and Investment in the People's Partnership's government, Vasant Bharath, on Team Lotus. Former senator and Minister of Transport in the People's Partnership's government, Devant Maharaj, was an early candidate for political leader, but was never formally nominated as he dropped out on nomination day on the 15th of November 2020, citing irregularities in the voting process. He endorsed Vasant Bharath and Team Lotus. Kamla Persad-Bissessar won with of 87.15% of the votes, while Vasant Bharath got 12.85% of the votes.

Nicole Dyer Griffith is a Trinidadian politician and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe Trinidad and Tobago 1999 and represented her country at Miss Universe 1999. After her reign as Miss Trinidad and Tobago she moved into the corporate sphere to become the Group Corporate Communications Manager at ANSA McAl Group of Companies. Nicole Dyer Griffith served as Senator and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Communication.

The elections follow a 3-2 ruling on May 18, 2023, from the United Kingdom's Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago's highest court of appeal, which stated that the government's one-year extension of the mandate of councillors and alderman was unlawful. The matter was brought before the Law Lords of the Privy Council by Ravi Balgobin Maharaj, and his legal team led by Anand Ramlogan, SC. The legal action taken by Ravi Balgobin Maharaj was necessary after the PNM government decided to extend the election by one year, which the Privy Council ruled was inconsistent with the rule of Democracy. The judgement handed down to Ravi Balgobin Maharaj by the Law Lords was a landmark ruling in the Commonwealth and marks the first time that a Court upheld the rights of citizens to vote in a Local Government Election.
