The IAU 100 km Asian Championships is an annual, ultrarunning competition over 100 kilometres for athletes from Asia and Oceana. It is organised by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and was first held in 2010.

The Athletics Federation of Serbia is the governing body for the sport of athletics in Serbia.

The IAU 100 km World Championships have been held annually since 1987, at different locations, and is organized by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). Due to lack of sponsorship, the 2013 event, planned for Jeju Island, South Korea, was cancelled and the 2014 event, originally due to be held at Daugavpils, Latvia, was held instead in Doha, Qatar.

In 2013, the foremost competition in athletics was the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow. The IAAF World Cross Country Championships will return after its move to a biennial format.

The Lake Saroma Ultramarathon is an annual 100 km and 50 km Ultramarathon foot road race held in June in the northeastern shore of Hokkaido, Japan since 1987. It is an IAU-labeled official 100 km and 50 km race, and an official JAAF race, and an AIMS -certified course. Its 1994 event was Asia's first IAU 100 km World Championship, and its 20th event in 2005 was also held as the IAU 100 km Road World Championship.

Norimi Sakurai is a Japanese ultramarathon runner. Sakurai is the current women's 100 km Track world record holder, and the current women's 6H Track world record holder,> and 2007 female winner of IAU 24-Hour Run 100 km World Championship. She is a three time female winner of 100 km Lake Saroma Ultramarathon and a five-time female winner of Hasetsune cup, an endurance trail race in Japan.

Ellie Greenwood is a British and Canadian ultramarathon runner. She is a four-time 100km World Champion, winning both individual and team titles in 2010 and 2014. She won the 90 km Comrades Marathon in South Africa in 2014, becoming the first British woman to win the race. Greenwood is also a former champion and course record holder for the Canadian Death Race, Western States 100, and the JFK 50 Mile Run.

The IAU 24 Hour World Championship is an international 24-hour run competition organised by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU). Since 2015, the World Championship has alternated annually with the IAU 100 km World Championships.

Lizzy Hawker is a British endurance athlete. She has been dubbed as the Queen of the mountains, running ultramarathons while climbing the heights of Mount Everest. Some of her career highlights include five wins at the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), former World Record holder for 24 Hours, and winner of the 2006 IAU 100 km World Championships.

The IAU 100 km European Championships is an annual, ultrarunning competition over 100 kilometres for European athletes. It is organised by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) and was first held in 1992 – five years after the launched of the World Championships for the distance. The competition features both an individual and national team component. The team race is decided by aggregated the three best times set by a nation's athletes.

Aleksandr “Sania” Sorokin is a Lithuanian long-distance runner who holds multiple world and European records. As of May 2023, he held seven world records on the track and road: 100 km (road), 100 miles (road), 100 miles (track), 6-hour run (track), 12-hour run (track), 12-hour run (road), 24-hour run (road). Sorokin won the IAU 24 Hour World Championship in 2019, IAU European 24 Hour Championships in 2022 and the Spartathlon in 2017.

The following tables show the List of world records in athletics progression in the 100K run, as recognised by World Athletics. The 100K run was introduced as a world record event in January 2004.
