IG Culture [1] is a London musician and performer best known as a pioneer of the broken beat movement. His production features rhythms and hybrids of several musical styles such as jazz-fusion, funk and soul.
IG Culture first became known as a member of the hip-hop duo Dodge City Productions in 1990. After the demise of that outfit, he founded an independent record label One Drop Interouter which released four albums. Later, he worked with the People label and founded the Main Squeeze label. He now runs the CoOp presents label with Alex Phountzi.
IG Culture produced an album by Japanese jazz artist Monday Michiru - Jazz Brat - in 1995 and appeared on the Roots Manuva album Brand New Second Hand in 1999. In 2001, he compiled and released a various-artists album called Inspirations album followed by a 2-CD set of the same name in 2003. He also produced tracks from the Les Nubians album One Step Forwardincluding the title track released in 2003. In 2019 Ig Culture returned to the studio and completed work on a new album which is a soundtrack to a theater dance show, the OST was titled EarthBound and is due for release late in 2019
Circa 2000, IG Culture founded the New Sector Movements project. While predominantly consisting of work by Culture himself, the project also serves as a collective featuring a number of broken beat artists such as Eric "Murky Waters" Appapoulay, Eska Mtungwazi, Kaidi "Agent K" Tatham, Julie Dexter and Kate "Bémbé Ségué" Phillips, as well as Frank McComb (ex-Buckshot LeFonque) and strings duo Chix With Stix (Izzy Dunn & Stella Page). [1] New Sector Movements signed with Virgin Records and its debut release was the 2001 EP No Tricks, which was followed by the Download This album later the same year. In 2004 the project released its second album Turn It Up, this time credited to NSM.
Coldcut are an English electronic music duo composed of Matt Black and Jonathan More. Credited as pioneers for pop sampling in the 1980s, Coldcut are also considered the first stars of UK electronic dance music due to their innovative style, which featured cut-up samples of hip-hop, soul, funk, spoken word and various other types of music, as well as video and multimedia. According to Spin, "in '87 Coldcut pioneered the British fad for 'DJ records'".
Jaime Meline, better known by the stage name El-P, is an American rapper, musician, songwriter, and record producer. Originally a member of Company Flow, El-P has been a driving force in alternative hip hop for over two decades, producing for rappers such as Aesop Rock, Mr. Lif, and Cage, among others. He is the co-founder, owner, and CEO of the Definitive Jux record label, and was a member of The Weathermen.
Broken beat or "BRUK" is an electronic music genre that can be characterized by syncopated rhythm typically in 4/4 meter, with staggered or punctuated snare beats and/or hand claps. It has heavily influenced music in the UK.
Joy Electric is the brand label for a series of electropop/synthpop productions by Ronnie Martin. Martin began producing music under the Joy Electric name in 1994, after the demise of Dance House Children, a band Ronnie was in with his brother Jason Martin of Starflyer 59. Starflyer 59 bass player and Velvet Blue Music owner Jeff Cloud joined Joy Electric from 1996 until 2002. Joy Electric is currently a solo act.
Cex is an American musical project run by Rjyan Claybrook Kidwell and started in 1998 at the age of 16. Although Cex and Kidwell are frequently used interchangeably, Cex occasionally expands to several people at sporadic points, such as particular tours or albums. In the past it has included Kidwell's musical associates, friends, touring partners, or high school bandmates.
Ryo Kawasaki was a Japanese jazz fusion guitarist, composer and band leader, best known as one of the first musicians to develop and popularise the fusion genre and for helping to develop the guitar synthesizer in collaboration with Roland Corporation and Korg. His album Ryo Kawasaki and the Golden Dragon Live was one of the first all-digital recordings and he created the Kawasaki Synthesizer for the Commodore 64. During the 1960s, he played with various Japanese jazz groups and also formed his own bands. In the early 1970s, he moved to New York City, where he settled and worked with Gil Evans, Elvin Jones, Chico Hamilton, Ted Curson, Joanne Brackeen amongst others. In the mid-1980s, Kawasaki drifted out of performing music in favour of writing music software for computers. He also produced several techno dance singles, formed his own record company called Satellites Records, and later returned to jazz-fusion in 1991.
Chad Bromley, better known by his stage name Apathy, is a rapper and producer from Willimantic, Connecticut.
Dodge City Productions (DCP) were a British hip hop/Acid jazz group based in London formed by IG Culture and DJ Dodge. They were one of the leaders of the Acid Jazz movement, and also received much acclaim and success for their remixes, usually done as "City Lick". The group split in the early 1990s, and both members went to have further success in the music industry as solo artists.
Vincenzo Luvineri, better known as Vinnie Paz, is a Sicilian American rapper and the lyricist behind the Philadelphia underground hip hop group Jedi Mind Tricks. He is also the frontman of the hip hop collective Army of the Pharaohs.
Mario Collazo is an underground rapper from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Collazo is one half of the rap duo OuterSpace and is a member of Army of the Pharaohs.
Lustral is a British electronic music project, incorporating the production duo of Richard Louis Simmonds and Stephen Christopher Jones. They were also billed as The Space Brothers and Chakra. In addition, the twosome released records under a variety of other pseudonyms, such as Ascension, Essence, Lamai, and Ultra High.
Blue Sky Black Death is a production duo based in the San Francisco Bay Area. It consists of Ryan Maguire, better known by his stage name Kingston, and Ian Taggart, better known by his stage name Young God. They are known principally for their hip hop and instrumental music, made with a mixture of live instrumentation and sampling. Their name is "a skydiving phrase alluding to beauty and death."
Booka Shade is a German house duo. It is made up of Walter Merziger and Arno Kammermeier, described as veterans of the Frankfurt electronic music scene. They have released 7 studio albums including Memento (2004) Movements (2006), The Sun & The Neon Light (2008), More! (2010), Eve (2013), Galvany Street (2017), Cut The Strings (2018), various EPs and a mix album for DJ Kicks.
Sounds from the Ground (SFTG) is an English electronic music duo formed in 1995. Both members Nick Woolfson and Elliot Jones met through their involvement with the underground music scene in London. Their style has been described as ambient dub-techno by musical critic Jason Birchmeier. According to Birchmeier, the compositions were "meticulously crafted downtempo (...) with a combination of analog and digital gear".
Eric Appapoulay is a British singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, programmer, multi-instrumentalist and guitarist. Appapoulay has been the guitar player for Neneh Cherry, the musical director for Daniel Bedingfield, the bassist for both Plan B and Nitin Sawhney, and the performing artist on the debut album Faith is Trust. Appapoulay is also currently the guitarist with Yusuf Islam. He is the co-owner of The Sanctuary Recording Studio in London, and member of SMV known for their work on the 2010 award-winning Plan B album, The Defamation of Strickland Banks.
James Dewitt Yancey, better known by the stage names J Dilla and Jay Dee, was an American record producer and rapper who emerged in the mid-1990s underground hip hop scene in Detroit, Michigan, as one third of the acclaimed music group Slum Village. His obituary at NPR stated that he "was one of the music industry's most influential hip-hop artists." He is considered by some as the "godfather of lo-fi hip hop".
