The IMOCA is a 60ft development class monohull sailing yacht governed by the International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA). The class pinnacle event are single or two person ocean races, such as the Route du Rhum and the Vendée Globe and this has been intimately linked to design development within the class. The class is recognised by World Sailing.
Juan Kouyoumdjian is a naval architect. He has designed ocean racing yachts, three of which have won the Volvo Ocean Race. He studied at the University of Southampton doing an Engineering Degree in ship science degree specializing in Yacht and Small Craft. During his studies, he did an internship with Philippe Briand in La Rochelle. On graduating in June 1993 he went on to work for Philippe Briand in La Rochelle for two years to work on the America's Cup Class boats, then he started his own business in 1996.
The International Monohull Open Class Association (IMOCA) is the governing body of the IMOCA class. Its main task is to design the class regulations for the ocean racing yachts IMOCA 60 and organising single-handed regattas. It was established in 1991. IMOCA has been a member of World Sailing (governing body of international sailing sport) since 1999.
The 2020–2021 Vendée Globe was a non-stop round the world yacht race for IMOCA 60 class yachts crewed by only one person. It was the ninth edition of the race, which started and finished in Les Sables-d'Olonne, France. The race began on 8 November 2020, with the first finishers completing the course on 27 January 2021 with the 25th and final yacht to complete the race arrived on 5 March 2021.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Super Bigou designed by Pierre Rolland and launched in the year 2000. What makes the boat rare is that it was constructed by Bernard Stamm the boats original skipper and owner rather than an established yard.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht DCNS was designed by Finot-Cong and launched in the 2008 after being built at Multiplast shipyard in Vannes, with the deck made by the Larros shipyard in Arcachon.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Brit Air (2), sail number FRA 62, was designed by Finot-Conq and launched in July 2007 after being built by Multiplast in France. Not to be confused with the IMOCA 60 Sodebo was rebranded for the 2006 season and competed as Brit Air while this boat was inbuild.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Holcim - PRB originally launched as PRB (5) was designed by Guillaume Verdier, built by Carrington Boats in Hythe, England, and launched in 2022. The boat was shipped to France for final fitout. The hull was moulded for an Ocean Race project that was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. The PRB team used the parts completed as a way to accelerate their build process and get back out on the water following the sinking of PRB 4 on 30 November, 2000.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Fleury-Michon X was designed by Philippe Briand and launched in February 1989 after being built by Jeanneau based in Les Herbiers, France.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Sill-Veolia, FRA 29 was designed by Marc Lombard and launched in the 26 April 2004 after being built JMV based in Cherbourg, France.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Whirlpool-Europe 2 was designed by Marc Lombard and launched in the August 1998 after being built Mag in France.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht MACSF was designed by Lauriot-Prévost and G. Verdier and launched in the August 2007 after being built by Chantier Naval de Laros in France.
The IMOCA 60 class racing yacht Groupe Bel was launched in 2007 to a design by VPLP and Guillaume Verdier and constructed by Indiana Yachting in Italy.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht LinkedOut, FRA 79 was designed by Guillaume Verdier, built by the Italy-based Persico Marine and launched on 9 July 2019.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Charal was designed by VPLP Design Office in partnership with Gurit for the structural design. The boat was launched on 20 August 2018 after being assembled by CDK Technologies based in Port La Forêt, Lorient in France.

The IMOCA 60 Class yacht No Way Back, NED 160 was designed by VPLP design and Guillaume Verdier and launched on 18 August 2015 after being built Persico in Italy. The boat had structural issues during the 2022 Route de Rhum when the ballast tanks demounted themselves. This while retiring from the race the previous day and heading back towards Portugal led to an onboard fire and the boat was lost.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Spirit Of Hungary, HUN 77, was designed by Nándor Fa and Attila Dery-Hu for the former to compete in the Barcelona World Race and Vendee Globe and launched in the 7 April 2014 after being built Pauger Composite based in Kápolnásnyék in Hungary.
The IMOCA 60 Class yacht Corum L'Epargne, FRA 9 was designed by Juan Kouyoumdjian and launched on 5 May 2020 after being built CDK Technologies based in Lorient, France.
The IMOCA 60 class yacht Fila was designed by Finot-Conq and launched in 1997 after being made by CNB in France. Just a year later, it won The Around Alone race in 1998.
