Ian Mendes

Ian Mendes (born December 28, 1976) is a Canadian journalist with The Athletic. Mendes covers the Ottawa Senators and the NHL for the online newspaper. He formerly worked for TSN 1200 Radio and previously covered the Senators with Sportsnet East, a television sports channel serving Eastern Ontario, Quebec and the Atlantic provinces.

Bio

Mendes was born in Mississauga, Ontario. After graduating from Carleton University's Journalism Program in 1998, he entered public relations with the Ottawa Lynx AAA baseball club, and wound up working on two occasions as their mascot, Lenny the Lynx. [1] After a brief stint with the Ottawa Senators' Public Relations Department, he joined Sportsnet in 2001 where he covered several MLB World Series and NHL Stanley Cups. During the 2012 World Series he was hit in the back with a foul ball during batting practice just as he was about to go live, the video clip of the incident [2] has over 2M views on YouTube. He currently covers the Ottawa Senators and the National Hockey League for The Athletic.

Mendes is of Goan Indo-Canadian descent and has two daughters with his wife Sonia. [3]

He was born in Ottawa around 1956 to William and Doreen Croswell Lee, and he attended the Earl of March Secondary School in Ottawa. He quarterbacked the Carleton Ravens football team for four years, graduating with a journalism degree. He then worked as a news anchor at CFCF radio in Montreal. Lee then moved to Toronto where he worked at CBC Radio as a national sports reporter where he also hosted the sports magazine show The Inside Track.

Dave Smart is a Canadian basketball coach currently working as an assistant coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. He served as the head men's basketball coach at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario from 1999 to 2019, where he led the Ravens to thirteen of the team's fifteen overall U Sports national championships in men's basketball. Smart was the Director of Basketball Operations at Carleton, and has served as a consultant to the coaching staff at the Ottawa Senators of the National Hockey League. Smart has also served as an assistant coach with the Canadian men's national team on multiple occasions, working with former NBA player Leo Rautins, and Jay Triano.

The Senators improved on their record compared to the previous season, but failed to qualify for the playoffs for the sixth consecutive season. The Senators were officially eliminated from the playoffs on April 6, 2023, in the 79th game of the season.
