Ian Sidney Ardern (born 28 February 1954) is a general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). A resident native of New Zealand at the time of his call in 2011, he is the second general authority from New Zealand in the church's history, after Douglas J. Martin.
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a general authority is a member of the highest levels of leadership in the church who has administrative and ecclesiastical authority over the church. A general authority's jurisdiction is church-wide, in contrast to the responsibilities of a local authority or an area authority, which relate to a particular area, unit, or department of the church. As a group, the general authorities are often referred to as "the Brethren". As of October 2017, there are 109 general authorities.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often informally known as the LDS Church or Mormon Church, is a nontrinitarian, Christian restorationist church that is considered by its members to be the restoration of the original church founded by Jesus Christ. The church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States, and has established congregations and built temples worldwide. According to the church, it has over 16 million members and 67,000 full-time volunteer missionaries. In 2012, the National Council of Churches ranked the church as the fourth-largest Christian denomination in the United States, with over 6.5 million members reported by the church, as of January 2018. It is the largest denomination in the Latter Day Saint movement founded by Joseph Smith during the period of religious revival known as the Second Great Awakening.
New Zealand is a sovereign island country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. The country geographically comprises two main landmasses—the North Island, and the South Island —and around 600 smaller islands. Ardern joined the LDS Church at age 8 after missionaries taught his family. His parents, Harry and Gwladys Ardern, did not join the church until after he and some of his siblings did. He attended the LDS Church-owned high school, Church College of New Zealand (CCNZ), where he first met his wife, Paula Judd. After serving a mission in the France Belgium Mission from 1973 to 1975, he and Paula married in the New Zealand Temple on 17 January 1976. They are the parents of four children.
Church College of New Zealand (CCNZ) was a private secondary school in Temple View, Hamilton, New Zealand, that was operated by the Church Educational System of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was closed at the end of the 2009 school year.

Ardern received both bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Waikato in New Zealand. In 1981, he joined the Church Educational System (CES) as an English teacher and was later principal of CCNZ. In 2004, he became the area director for CES in the Pacific. Ardern has served in the LDS Church as a stake Young Men president, bishop, high councilor, and counselor in a stake presidency. After serving as president of the Fiji Suva Mission from 2005 to 2008, Ardern returned to CES employment in New Zealand as an institute director and seminary coordinator in Hamilton.

The University of Waikato, informally Waikato University, is a comprehensive university in Hamilton, New Zealand. The university was established in 1964, and has a satellite campus located in Tauranga.
Ardern was appointed an area seventy in the Eighth Quorum of Seventy on 3 April 2010. He was then appointed to the First Quorum of the Seventy on 2 April 2011. From 2011 to 2014, he served as second counselor in the presidency of the church's Philippines Area, and served as the area's president from 2014 to 2017. [1] He has served as a counselor in the presidency of the church's Pacific Area since August 2017. In October 2011, Ardern became the first general authority from New Zealand to speak in the LDS Church's general conference in 24 years.

An area is an administrative unit of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which typically is composed of multiple stakes and missions. These areas are the primary church administrative unit between individual stakes and the church as a whole.
General Conference is a gathering of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, held biannually every April and October at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. During each conference, members of the church gather in a series of two-hour sessions to listen to sermons from church leaders. It consists of four general sessions. Since April 2018 the priesthood session is only held during the April conference, and a General Women's Session held during October's conference.
