It is part of the Norwegian County Road 848 that crosses the Mjøsundet strait between the mainland of Norway and the island of Andørja. The bridge and the nearby Ibestad Tunnel connect the two main islands of Ibestad together with the mainland.

The administrative center of the former municipality was the village of Grov where Astafjord Church is located. The Astafjorden (strait) flowed along the northern part of the municipality and it was the namesake for the municipality.

Rolla (Norwegian) or Rálli (Northern Sami) is an island in Ibestad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The island of Andørja lies to the northeast, the Vågsfjorden lies to the north and west, and the Astafjorden lies to the south. The highest point on the 106-square-kilometre (41 sq mi) island of Rolla is Drangen at a height of 1,022 metres (3,353 ft). The population on Rolla (2001) is 1,078.

Langlitinden is the highest mountain on the island of Andørja and is also the highest mountain on any Norwegian island. It is located on the northeastern part of the island in Ibestad Municipality in Troms county, Norway, just to the south of the Mjøsund Bridge and just northwest of the shore of the Astafjorden. The mountain is 1,276 m (4,186 ft) tall.

Andørja (Norwegian) or Áttir (Northern Sami) is an island in Ibestad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The 135-square-kilometre (52 sq mi) island lies about 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of the town of Harstad. The island is located entirely within Ibestad Municipality, although the island itself was a separate municipality from 1926 until 1964. The largest population area on Andørja island is the Å - Ånstad - Laupstad area on the west coast with 205 residents (2001). Andørja Church is located in Engenes on the northwestern tip of the island.

The Ibestad Tunnel is an undersea tunnel in Ibestad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. The tunnel connects the islands of Rolla and Andørja. The western end of the tunnel begins in the village of Hamnvik on Rolla. Then the tunnel goes under the Bygda strait and connects to the village of Sørvika on the island of Andørja. The 3,398-metre (2.1 mi) long tunnel reaches a maximum depth of 112 metres (367 ft) below sea level. The width of the tunnel is 6 metres (20 ft) wide, and the steepest grade within the tunnel is 9.9%.

Ibestad Church is a parish church of the Church of Norway in Ibestad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is located in the village of Hamnvik in eastern part of the island of Rolla. It is the main church for the Ibestad parish which is part of the Trondenes prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The white, stone, neo-gothic church was built in a long church style in 1881 using plans drawn up by the architect J.A. Johansen from Trondheim. The church seats about 500 people.

Sørrollnes Chapel is a chapel of the Church of Norway in Ibestad Municipality in Troms county, Norway. It is located in the village of Sørrollnes, serving the western part of the island of Rolla. It is an annex chapel for the Ibestad parish which is part of the Trondenes prosti (deanery) in the Diocese of Nord-Hålogaland. The gray, wooden chapel was built in a long church style in 1976. The chapel seats about 85 people.
