History

New Yorker Alexander Perls and Londoner Simon Break met while Perls was studying in London and later joined Glen Johnson in the musical collective Piano Magic. [2] After leaving Piano Magic, Perls and Break formed Icebreaker International.

Their debut album, Distant Early Warning , was released in September 1999 through the independent label Aesthetics with funding provided by NATOarts. The album's title refers to a network of radar stations in the Arctic that served as an early-warning system during the Cold War. [3] [4]

Continuing their collaboration with NATOarts — an organisation that describes itself as promoting "global security and stability through conceptual art" — the duo claimed to have boarded a container ship named *Trein Maersk* in early 2000, spending two months recording sounds during its voyage from Japan to Canada. These recordings were used to create the concept album Trein Maersk: A Report to the NATOarts Board of Directors (2000). [4] In 2003, Icebreaker International collaborated with Danish artist Manual to release Into Forever through Morr Music, blending ambient soundscapes and melodic electronic textures.

Musical style

The group's work combines electronic production, ambient composition and field recordings, often presented through conceptual or documentary-style frameworks. Themes of industrialisation, global trade, and geopolitical communication recur throughout their releases. [1]
