Ikoyi Club

The Ikoyi Club was established as a European club in 1938 in Ikoyi, Lagos. [1] It was originally converted from a prison to a rest house. [2] It occupies approximately 456 acres of land. In the subsequent years, the European Club merged with the Lagos Golf Club. Besides the golf course, Ikoyi Club also has many sports and relaxation amenities which provide first class facilities for members and their families.

Today, the club has grown from its exclusively European membership to modern day membership of diverse nationalities. [3] [4] Some of Nigeria's most aristocratic families are now members.The slogan of the club is Global Harmony Through Recreation. [5]

Other information

The cocktails and club sandwiches are to be among the best in the world. A famous cocktail amongst Nigerians and other drink lovers is called the Chapman. The recipe for it was created on the grounds of Ikoyi Club by Sam Alamutu, an executive in Ikoyi Hotel (a sister company to the Ikoyi Club) in 1938. [10]

The Nigerian Open was a golf tournament in Nigeria, played between 1969 and 1999. It was generally played at the Ikoyi Club in Ikoyi, Lagos. From 1997 to 1999 it was played at the IBB International Golf & Country Club in Abuja. It was an fixture on the Safari Circuit until 1993, and also a Challenge Tour event between 1990 and 1993.

Chapman is a non-alcoholic drink, usually red in colour. Often referred to as a non-alcoholic punch, it is traditionally made with a mix of Fanta, Sprite, Cucumber, Lemon, Grenadine and Angostura bitters and is traditionally served in a large mug with ice and a few slices of cucumber. It is often described as Nigeria's favourite drink and though predominantly served without alcohol, it can also be served with a hint of vodka or rum.

Fisayo Soyombo, is a Nigerian investigative journalist and founder of the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ). He was a former editor at The Cable.
