Ilegales (also called Los Ilegales, "The Illegals") is a Grammy-nominated [2] [3] Dominican merenhouse group, which is one of the main exponents that helped to introduce and establish the merenhouse to the mainstrean and get an international audience. The band is well known by hits such as "La Morena", "Taki Taki", "Tu Recuerdo", "La Otra" and "Chucucha". They were one of the first merenhouse acts to perform at Viña del Mar International Song Festival in 1998 and 2003.
Ilegales is one of the best selling Dominican acts, receiving gold and platinum certifications across Latin America, and winning Latin Billboard Music awards, Soberano Awards, and receiving nominations to the Grammy Awards and Latin Grammy Awards on several occasions.
The group is led by singer-songwriter Vladimir Dotel and also includes David Diaz and Junior Pimentel.
The group was founded in 1993.
In 1995, Ilegales released their debut album and was certified hit. In 1996, the single "La Morena" was a massive hit and Peaked at 6 on RPM Dance Charts in Canada. [4] It was certified Gold in Mexico selling over 100,000 unites, Gold in Venezuela and Platinum in the United States. [5]
In 1998, they won "Best Rap Artist" and "Best Rap Album" for Rebotando at the 1998 Latin Billboard Music Awards. [6] [7] En la Mira, was nominated for "Best Rap Album of The Year" at the 1999 Latin Billboard Music Awards. [8] Also, in that year they performed at Viña del Mar Festival. By the end of 1999, "Ilegales" and "Rebotando" had sold over 1.5 millions of copies worldwide. [9] [10] and where certified four times platinum in Chile. [11]
In 1998 came a terrible loss for the group as one of their members, Jason Gonzalez, passed away in an automobile accident. Their performances at the 1998 Viña del Mar International Song Festival in Chile were in remembrance of him. [12]
In 1999, "Live" was nominated for Best Merengue Album at the 43rd Grammy Awards. [13]
In 2002, the band was nominated for the Lo Nuestro Award. [14] In addition to reaching the Billboard Tropical charts on their own, the group also had a hit with Alexandra Cabrera De La Cruz of Monchy y Alexandra. They were nominated for the Latin Grammy in 2003 for Best Pop Album. [3]
In 2013, Ilegales received the nomination of "Tropical Songs Artist of the Year, Duo or Group" at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards. [15]
In 2015, Ilegales was nominated as "Best Group or Band" to the Lo Nuestro Award. [16] In that same year, they performed at the Nuryn Sanlley amphitheater to celebrate 20th Anniversary of the band. [17] The Single "Pasarla Bien" with El Potro Alvarez, become their 8th Top 10 on Biilboard Tropical Airplay and peaked at number one on Venezuela airplay. [18]
In 2019, Ilegales’ 12th studio album Tropicalia was nominated for Best Contemporary/Tropical Fusion Album at the 20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards.

Ojalá Que Llueva Café is the fourth studio album by Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra released in 1989 by Karen Records. It is considered one of his most emblematic and important albums. The album set the musical path for his later albums, re-formulating Dominican merengue and bachata music through the contemporary elements of pop, rock, salsa, or jazz. Incorporating socially conscious lyrics with danceable merengues and romantic-poetic bachatas, the album is considered one of the most important albums of his discography.
Fogaraté! is the seventh album of the famous Dominican songwriter and musician Juan Luis Guerra. It was released on July 19, 1994. The album mixed a variety of music genres including rural and flolklroic rots of merengue called "Perico Ripao" with elements of African soukus music and Tropical Music such as Reggae with the collaboration of African guitarist Diblo Dibala and Dominican accordionist Francisco Ulloa, along with Son, Bachata and Salsa. Also, the album features a particular, bachata-styled adaptation of the Lacrimosa movement from Mozart's Requiem Mass in D Minor and Guerra's first song fully in English "July 19". Exploring lyrics and themes about magical realism of Latin American literature and commenting on the politics of the Caribbean, for many fans and critics, Fogaraté! is one of his most musically complex album.
Areíto is the sixth album by Juan Luis Guerra with his band 440, released on 8 December 1992, by Karem Records. The album, meant to be a tribute to the indigenous tribes of the Dominican Republic, is named after a dance that the aboriginal inhabitants of the Greater Antilles (Taínos) accompanied with songs during their festivals and religious rites. The album contains twelve tracks including "Cuando te Beso", interpret by Santo Domingo Philharmonic Orchestra. Congolese musician Diblo Dibala played guitar on the song "El Costo de la Vida", which was a Spanish cover of his own soukous song "Kimia Eve", while the last track on the album, "Naboria daca, mayanimacaná", is sung in Arawak, the language of the Taíno people. Areíto was originally set to be released in early April 1992, but was first delayed to the end of October 1992 and was finally released on 8 December 1992.
Geoffrey Royce Rojas, known professionally as Prince Royce, is an American singer. At an early age, Royce took an interest in music, and in his teenage years began experimenting with music and writing poetry. By age nineteen, Royce met Andrés Hidalgo, who became his manager. Grandes Éxitos de Juan Luis Guerra y 440 or simply Grandes Éxitos is a compilation album of Dominican singer-songwriter Juan Luis Guerra, and his band 440 released in July 1995 by Karem Records. It contained Guerra's fifteen biggest hits from 1988 to 1994 on the original version and from the albums Mudanza y Acarreo(1985) to Fogarate! (1994) on the international versions. The Barrio Fino World Tour was a concert tour by reggaeton singer Daddy Yankee to promote his third studio album, Barrio Fino (2004). The track was a commercial success, toping the airplay charts in Mexico and was the fourth single of the album to peak insade of the top 10 at the US Hot Latin Tracks.
