The Ilkley Open was a grass court tennis event founded in May 1885 as the Ilkley Tournament. [1] It was held at the Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club (f.1880), [2] Ilkley, West Yorkshire, England through until 1981, [3] when the it failed to find any new sponsors the tournament ended.

History

The Ilkley Open was first established in May 1885. [4] The winner of first men's singles event was Mr. E.W. Fletcher who defeated Mr. A.R. Atkinson. In 1886 the first women's singles event was won by Miss. Beatrice Wood who defeated Miss Lila Moir. (for this year only it was also valid as the East Yorkshire Championships). Ilkley Lawn Tennis Club also played host for Yorkshire Lawn Tennis Association tournament called the Yorkshire Championships four times (1888–90, 1893). From 1890 to 1968 the event went under the name of the Ilkley Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. [5] [6]

In 1981 after a period of 95 years the final Ilkley Open was concluded. The final men's singles event was won by the Geoffrey Paish who defeated Simon Ickringill, who is now the head coach at the Ilkley club. [7] In 1983 final women's singles title was won by Cathy Berry who defeated Michelle Collins.

Former winners of the men's singles included; Joshua Pim, William Drumond Hamilton, Major Ritchie, Andras Kalman, Mohammed Arif Ilahi, Hank Irvine and Geoffrey Paish. Former winners of the women's singles title included; Helen Jackson, Gem Hoahing, Shirley Bloomer, Rita Bentley, Robin Blakelock and Liz Starkie.

Following the end of this tournament international tennis events have continued to be staged at the Ilkley club. From 1996 to 1998 the ITF Ilkley tournament was part of the ITF Women's Circuit, and again between 2006 and 2007. Since 2010 the Ilkley Trophy an ITF W100 category tournament is still being played today. [8]

The Nottingham Trophy was an annual tennis tournament played in Nottingham, England. The tournament was part of the ATP Challenger Tour and the International Tennis Federation as a $75,000 event. The tournament's key sponsor was Dutch insurance firm Aegon. The tournament was held at the end of May before the main tour's grass-court season starts.

It was mainly held at Scarborough, North Yorkshire, Great Britain from. The tournament was discontinued in 1974 when it was staged at Hoylake.

The East of England Championships also called the East of England Lawn Tennis Championships was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1885 as the Felixstowe Open Lawn Tennis Tournament. The Leicestershire County Lawn Tennis Championships or simply called the Leicestershire Championships was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1900 that ran until 1914 as an open international tennis event. In 1926 the event was reclassified as a closed tournament open only to Leicestershire residents and club players only.

The Ripon Open was a combined men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established founded in 1880 as the Ripon Club Tournament It was staged at the Ripon Lawn Tennis Club, Ripon, North Yorkshire, England and ran through until 1939 when it was abolished.

The Bedford Open also known as the Bedford Lawn Tennis Open Tournament was men's and women's grass court tennis tournament established in 1880 as the Bedfordshire LTC Tournament. It was held at the Bedford Lawn Tennis Club, Bedford, Berkshire, England and ran through until 1974 when it was abolished.

Beatrice Draffen was a British tennis player from Ackworth, West Riding of Yorkshire, England active from 1884 to 1897. She was a two time semi finalist in the women's singles at the 1895 Wimbledon Championships and 1896 Wimbledon Championships. She won 10 career singles titles.

The Swanage Open Lawn Tennis Championships or simply the Swanage Open was men's grass court tournament founded in 1883 as the Swanage LTC Tournament. The tournament was held at Swanage Lawn Tennis Club, Swanage, Dorset, England until 1979.

The Keswick Open also known as the Keswick and Lake District Lawn Tennis Tournament was a men's and women's grass court tennis tournament founded in 1888. The tournament was organised by the Keswick Lawn Tennis Club, and played annually at Fitz Park, Keswick, Cumbria, England until 1910.
