The Indian Laser Association (ILA) is an association of persons interested in laser technology and applications. The ILA is non-profit multidisciplinary professional organization. The association aims to promote education, advancement and applications of laser science and technology in India, through various activities such as organization of seminars, symposia and training courses; publications of books and journals; and promotion of active interaction with other professional institutions especially in the field of medicine and engineering.

Contents

Objectives

  1. Help towards the advancement, dissemination and application of laser science and techniques.
  2. Promote interaction among all persons, bodies, institutions (private and/or state owned, national or international) and specifically interested in lasers and related areas.
  3. Organize seminars, symposia, workshops, lectures, debates, training courses, conferences, and film shows pertaining to lasers and their applications.
  4. Organize regional and/or special interest chapters in the country as and when needed.
  5. Acquire property such as office premises, guest houses, repair cum training workshops and research and development centers.
  6. Secure grants, funds, endowments and to administer them to further any or all of the above aims and objectives.
  7. Frame, adopt and modify rules and regulations by which the association may conduct its business.

Conferences

Every year the ILA arranges a National Laser Symposium (NLS) under the aegis of DAE-BRNS. Before every symposium, the ILA arranges tutorials for students and young researchers.

Proceedings of the NLS are published and distributed after each conference to participants.

From 1984 to 1994 the conference series was titled the Symposium on Space Nuclear Power Systems, but the conference scope was broadened with the 12th symposium in 1995, at which a number of new topics were added. Bhaktisvarupa Damodara Swami, also known as Dr. Thoudam Damodara Singh and by the honorific Sripada, was a Gaudiya Vaishnava spiritual leader, chemist, writer about religion and science, and poet. In 1971 he received spiritual initiation from A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. A few years later he became one of the religious leaders of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness.

Jerry Pinto is a Mumbai-based Indian-English poet, novelist, short story writer, translator, as well as journalist. Pinto's works include Helen: The Life and Times of an H-Bomb (2006), which won the Best Book on Cinema Award at the 54th National Film Awards, Surviving Women (2000) and Asylum and Other Poems (2003). His first novel Em and the Big Hoom was published in 2012. Pinto won the Windham-Campbell prize in 2016 for his fiction. He was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2016 for his novel Em and the Big Hoom.

The Lukacs Distinguished Professor chair was established in 1989 by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Bowling Green State University in honor of Eugene Lukacs, who came to Bowling Green with his colleagues Radha Laha and Vijay Rohatgi in 1972 to establish the doctoral program in statistics. The International Association for Lichenology (IAL) is an organisation that encourages the understanding of lichens and lichenology, and promotes their study and conservation worldwide. It unites lichenologists across the globe, as well as national and regional organisations into one group. It is affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The IAL organises field courses and excursions, as well as symposia which are the biggest events in lichenology on the international level. The 8th International Symposium will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in August 2016.

Mallasamudram Subramanyam Ramakumar was an Indian mechanical engineer, outstanding scientist and roboticist, known for developing robotic and automation technologies for Indian nuclear and defence purposes. He was the director of Nuclear Fuels, Automation and Manufacturing Group of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Trombay. He was the first Head of Division of Remote Handling of Robotics (DRHR) at the organization. He pioneered robotic technology in India. Ramakumar was one of the key persons behind the Pokhran-II test, conducted by India in 1998. It was his team, which developed the online fuelling and coolant channel inspection systems for the power reactors for the 1998 tests.

Kamanio Chattopadhyay is an Indian materials engineer and an honorary professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. He is the chair of the Mechanical Sciences Division of IISc and a former chair of the Department of Materials Engineering.

Krishna Balaji Sainis is an Indian immunologist. He is a former senior professor of Life Sciences at Homi Bhabha National Institute and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. Since 1999, he has served as the Indian representative on the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology for his contributions to medical sciences in 1994.

Deepak Mathur is an Indian molecular and atomic physicist and was a Distinguished Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. He has been the J C Bose National Fellow at the Department of Atomic and Molecular Physics at Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Founding Director of the UM-DAE Centre for Excellence in Basic Science at the University of Mumbai. Known for his research on molecular and biological physics, Mathur is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 1991. Amongst other awards, he has been the Royal Society's Guest Fellow at Oxford University and winner of the European Union's Erasmus-Mundus prize in optical science which he held at Imperial College London. Currently he is an adjunct professor at Manipal Academy of Higher Education and is also learning to fly. His initial training was on a Grob G-115 2-seater training aircraft but he has now moved on to flying PA-28 4-seater aircraft.

Biswarup Mukhopadhyaya is an Indian theoretical high energy physicist and a senior professor at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata. Known for his research on High energy colliders, Higgs bosons, neutrinos, Mukhopadhyaya is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to physical sciences in 2003.
