Inside MMA was a live mixed martial arts news magazine, which aired on AXS TV, immediately following the network's live AXS TV Fights broadcasts. Hosted by Mauro Ranallo and UFC Hall of Famer Bas Rutten, the series provided an in-depth look at the world of MMA, with live breakdowns, talk, highlights, and analysis from major MMA organizations such as the UFC, Bellator, and the World Series of Fighting. Inside MMA debuted on AXS TV, then known as HDNET, in September 2007, and was the longest-running MMA news show on television. [1]

Hosts

Inside MMA was hosted by combat sports personality Mauro Ranallo and UFC Hall of Famer, former UFC heavyweight champion, and King of Pancrase Bas Rutten, [2] along with correspondent Ron Kruck. Kruck also filled in as co-host on occasion. [3]

For the first nine seasons, sports commentator Kenny Rice hosted the series alongside Rutten. [4]

Content

Inside MMA aired immediately following AXS TV Fights broadcasts. Each show began with highlights and analysis of the night's event with AXS TV Fights commentators UFC Hall of Famer Pat Miletich and "The Voice" Michael Schiavello. [5] Hosts Ranallo and Rutten also provided highlights from MMA and other combat sport events from around the world, featuring promotions such as UFC, Bellator, World Series of Fighting, and One FC, as well as many other regional MMA promotions. [6] Each episode also included a viewer submission segment, featuring highlights submitted by Inside MMA viewers. [7]

Correspondent Ron Kruck provided on-site coverage of major MMA events, feature stories on issues facing the sport, and interview segments with fighters, coaches, trainers, and others who contribute to and influence Mixed Martial Arts. [8]

Inside MMA frequently featured in-studio, on-site, phone and satellite interviews with guests from all facets of the sport, including fighters, promoters, managers, officials and journalists. [9] Notable guests included Dana White, [10] Ronda Rousey, [11] Daniel Cormier, [12] Nick Diaz, [13] Conor McGregor, [14] Gilbert Melendez, [15] Tito Ortiz, [16] Georges St-Pierre, [17] José Aldo, [18] TJ Dillashaw, [19] Dominick Cruz, [20] Jon Jones, [21] and Mickey Rourke. Guest hosts

Occasionally, MMA fighters filled in as special guest hosts on Inside MMA. Past guest hosts include Johny Hendricks, [23] Roy Nelson, [24] Phil Davis, [25] [26] Miesha Tate, [27] and Urijah Faber. [28]

History

On August 15, 2014, UFC fighter Krzysztof Soszynski officially announced his retirement from the sport, citing memory loss, in a live on-air exclusive, while appearing as a guest on an episode of Inside MMA. [29]

In late 2014, AXS TV announced that the show would move time slots to after the network's weekly live AXS TV Fights broadcasts. The move would take place starting Friday, Nov. 7, 2014. [30]

In May 2015, UFC President Dana White appeared on the show to announce that Rutten would be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in July. [31]

Inside MMA aired a special episode dedicated to UFC Women's Bantamweight Champion and Legacy Fighting Championship's first ever women's titlist Holly Holm on Nov. 20, 2015 following her defeat of former undefeated champion Ronda Rousey. The special included interviews with Holm, her coaches and teammates, along with analysis of her fight plan and highlights from her matches on AXS TV Fights. [32]

On March 9, 2016, Inside MMA announced that combat sports personality Mauro Ranallo would be the new series host alongside Bas Rutten beginning March 25, 2016, taking over for longtime host Kenny Rice. Rice would continue as a special correspondent for the show. [33] When Mauro Ranallo was absent due to his announcing duties for WWE, he was replaced by Josh Barnett on June 17, 2016, until June 24, 2016. Barnett hosted the show on August 19, 2016, replacing the absence of Bas Rutten.

On Sept. 19, 2016, AXS TV announced that 'Inside MMA' would air its final episode on Sept. 30, 2016, ending a 9-year, 10-season, 433-episode run. [34]

Mauro Domenico Ranallo is a Canadian sports announcer, commentator and mental health advocate. He is currently signed as a play-by-play announcer with MMA organization Bellator, and also performs play-by-play duties for boxing broadcaster Showtime. He is also known for his time with WWE on the NXT and SmackDown brands. He has experience in Canadian football, ice hockey, professional wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts events.

HDNet Fights was a US based television outlet for various MMA and combat sports promotions. Its broadcast lineup included DREAM, Sengoku, K-1, Strikeforce, Adrenaline MMA, M-1 Global, Ring of Honor, Maximum Fighting Championship, Affliction Entertainment, Urban Conflict Championship, BAMMA, XFC, Superior Challenge, CFA, Titan Fighting Championships and the now defunct IFL among others. As of February 19, 2010, it has promoted two events of its own and broadcast 60 events by other promotions. After July 2, 2012, when HDNet re-branded itself as AXS TV, HDNet Fights was re-branded as AXS TV Fights.

Dominick Cruz is an American professional mixed martial artist, sports analyst and commentator. He currently competes in the Bantamweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he is a former two-time UFC Bantamweight Champion. Cruz has also competed for World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), and was the final WEC Bantamweight Champion. As of December 5, 2023, he is #10 in the UFC bantamweight rankings.

Takeya Mizugaki is a retired Japanese mixed martial artist who most notably competed in the Bantamweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. A professional competitor from 2005 to 2020, Mizugaki also competed for Absolute Championship Berkut, WEC, Shooto, and Cage Force.

Renan Barão, is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and a former UFC Bantamweight Champion. He held one of the longest unbeaten streaks in MMA history - following a loss in his professional debut, he recorded 35 straight fights without a loss over a span of ten years. During his championship reign, he was ranked as a top three pound-for-pound fighter and regarded as one of the best mixed martial artists in the world.

While mixed martial arts is primarily a male dominated sport, it does have female athletes. For instance, Female competition in Japan includes promotions such as DEEP Jewels. Now defunct promotions that featured female fighters were Valkyrie, and Smackgirl. Professional mixed martial arts organizations in the United States that invite women to compete are industry leader Ultimate Fighting Championship, the all female Invicta Fighting Championships, Resurrection Fighting Alliance, Bellator Fighting Championships, and Legacy Fighting Championship. Now defunct promotions that featured female fighters were Strikeforce and EliteXC. There has been a growing awareness of women in mixed martial arts due to popular female fighters and personalities such as Amanda Nunes, Megumi Fujii, Gina Carano, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos, Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, Holly Holm and Joanna Jędrzejczyk and among others. Carano became known as "the face of women's MMA" after appearing in a number of EliteXC events. This was furthered by her appearances on MGM Television's 2008 revival of their game show American Gladiators.

AXS TV Fights is the brand name of AXS TV's live mixed martial arts (MMA), Muay Thai and kickboxing broadcasts. Formerly known as HDNET Fights, the program's name was changed to AXS TV Fights in July 2012, following the network's rebrand from HDNET to AXS TV.

UFC Apex is a live events and production center in Enterprise, Nevada, operated and owned by the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), a division of TKO Group Holdings, a wholly owned subsidiary of Endeavor Group Holdings. The facility was chosen in part due to its close proximity to the UFC Performance Institute, which serves as the company headquarters and is located across the street. The Apex was built to host live events as well as studio shows.
