The International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE) [1] is a non-profit organisation with mission to promote the exchange of knowledge and to advance the practice of structural engineering worldwide in the service of the profession and society, taking into consideration technical, economic, environmental, aesthetic and social aspects.

Contents

Overview

IABSE deals all kinds of structures composed of any kind of material, all phases of the construction process, as well as education and research. The association’s name in French is "Association Internationale des Ponts et Charpentes (AIPC)" and in German "Internationale Vereinigung für Brückenbau und Hochbau (IVBH)“. It was founded in 1929 and has its seat in Zurich. IABSE publishes the quarterly Journal Structural Engineering International SEI, available online via Ingenta.

Awards

The Outstanding Structure Award has been presented annually since 2000. It recognises the most remarkable, innovative, creative, or otherwise stimulating structures completed within the last few years. As a project award, it recognizes the team effort of the engineer, the architect, the contractor, and the owner involved in completion of the project. [2]

The Anton Tedesko Medal is awarded by the IABSE Foundation to honour a Laureate and support a Fellow of the association for study leave for a promising young engineer to gain practical experience in a prestigious engineering firm, outside his/her home country. [3]

Structural engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering in which structural engineers are trained to design the 'bones and joints' that create the form and shape of human-made structures. Structural engineers also must understand and calculate the stability, strength, rigidity and earthquake-susceptibility of built structures for buildings and nonbuilding structures. The structural designs are integrated with those of other designers such as architects and building services engineer and often supervise the construction of projects by contractors on site. They can also be involved in the design of machinery, medical equipment, and vehicles where structural integrity affects functioning and safety. See glossary of structural engineering.

Leslie Earl Robertson was an American engineer. He was the lead structural engineer of the Twin Towers of the original World Trade Center in New York City, and served as structural engineer on numerous other projects, including the U.S. Steel Tower in Pittsburgh, Shanghai World Financial Center, and the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong.

Structural engineers analyze, design, plan, and research structural components and structural systems to achieve design goals and ensure the safety and comfort of users or occupants. Their work takes account mainly of safety, technical, economic, and environmental concerns, but they may also consider aesthetic and social factors.
