IETM, fully International network for contemporary performing arts is a cultural network for performing arts organizations and individual members working in the contemporary performing arts worldwide. Established in 1981 in Polverigi, Italy, during the Festival of Polverigi (now called Inteatro festival), the network had its first meeting on 15 October 1981, at the Théâtre Gérard Philippe, Paris. In 2005, IETM dropped its original title Informal European Theater Meeting to become simply ‘IETM’ with the tagline ‘International network for contemporary performing arts”. [4] [5] [6] IETM is one of the foremost European cultural networks, it was founded by and for professionals to create a space of exchange and strengthen international collaboration in the thriving independent performing arts sector. [7]
The Network stands as at June 2024, with over 530 performing arts organizations and individual members working in the contemporary performing arts in more than 60 countries worldwide. [8] [9] IETM advocates for the value of the arts and culture in a changing world and empowers performing arts professionals through access to international connections, knowledge and a dynamic forum for exchange. Starting in 2003, IETM also became active as a bridge between its professional members in Europe and those in Asia (including Central Asia), Africa and the Americas, although its main membership still comes from Europe. IETM host peer-to-peer learning, exchanges and dialogues at events, commissions publications and research, and provides network for performing arts professionals on her website. [13] IETM hold two plenary meetings a year in different European cities and smaller meetings all over the world. [1] [11] [14] [15]
IETM is a membership based network focusing on contemporary performing arts. Since its formation, the network have over 530 members in more than 60 countries worldwide, this include festivals, companies, producers, theaters, research and resource centers, Independent artist, Artist Collective, universities and institutional bodies. [16] [17] [18] [19] Membership fee of the network is based on annual turnover of your member organization’s or members freelance activities [17]
IETM is frequently involved in various European and international projects, functioning as an organizer and as a collaborator. Objectives of these projects ranges from creating new knowledge, explore relevant topics, and to address the needs of both its members and the sector in general. [20]

Festac '77, also known as the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture was a major international festival held in Lagos, Nigeria, from 15 January 1977 to 12 February 1977. The month-long event celebrated African culture and showcased African music, fine art, literature, drama, dance and religion to the world. Around 16,000 participants, representing 56 African nations and countries of the African Diaspora, performed at the event. Artists who performed at the festival included Stevie Wonder from United States, Gilberto Gil from Brazil, Bembeya Jazz National from Guinea, Mighty Sparrow from Trinidad and Tobago, Les Ballets Africains, South African artist Miriam Makeba, and Franco Luambo Makiadi. At the time it was held, it was the largest pan-African gathering to ever take place. The event attracted around 500,000 spectators.

Keg de Souza is an Australian artist working across a range of mediums including performance art, drawing, temporary architecture, food, mapping, zines, and artist's booka. Working for the Academy of Arts, Berlin, from 1962, she has founded regular programs of innovative art in the city, such as Pantomime-Musik-Tanz-Theater in 1970 and the Tanz im August festival in 1988. She managed the program for Berlin as the European City of Culture that year. Hertling is considered the grande dame of the established German Freies Theater.
