The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is the air branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces. It is the youngest branch of the Nigerian Armed Forces, established four years after the nation became independent. As at 2021, the air force is one of the largest in Africa, consisting of over 18,000 personnel. The Boko Haram insurgency began in July 2009, when the militant Islamist and jihadist rebel group Boko Haram started an armed rebellion against the government of Nigeria. The Vanguard for the Protection of Muslims in Black Africa, better known as Ansaru and less commonly called al-Qaeda in the Lands Beyond the Sahel, is an Islamic fundamentalist Jihadist militant organisation originally based in the northeast of Nigeria. Originally a faction of Boko Haram, the group announced in 2012 that it had pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda and was independent. Across Nigeria, there are a series of disputes over arable land between predominantly Muslim Fulani herders and predominantly Christian non-Fulani farmers. The conflicts have been especially prominent in the Middle Belt since the return of democracy in 1999. More recently, they have deteriorated into attacks on farmers by Fulani herdsmen.
Kidnapping is a major problem in Nigeria in the early 21st century. Kidnapping by bandits and insurgents is among the biggest organised or gang crime in Nigeria and is a national security challenge.

The Afaka kidnapping took place on 11 March 2021, when armed Gunmen attacked Federal College of Forestry Mechanization, Afaka, Igabi LGA, in Kaduna State and kidnapped 39 students just weeks after a similar attack in Jangebe, Zamfara State. The abducted comprised 23 females along with 16 males and was carried out late at night. It was the third incident of mass kidnapping from a school in northern Nigeria in the year 2021.
The 2023 Kaduna State gubernatorial election was held on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Kaduna State, concurrent with elections to the Kaduna State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election — which was postponed from its original 11 March date — was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Nasir Ahmad el-Rufai was term-limited and could not seek re-election to a third term. Senator Uba Sani retained the office for the APC by a margin of less than 1% — under 11,000 votes — over first runner-up and PDP nominee Isa Ashiru, a former member of the House of Representatives.
The bandit conflict in northwest Nigeria is an ongoing conflict between the country's federal government and various gangs and ethnic militias. Starting in 2011, the insecurity remaining from the conflict between the Fulani and Hausa ethnic groups quickly allowed other criminal and jihadist elements to form in the region.
Rigasa is a sub-urban settlement within a very close proximity to Kaduna metropolis, Kaduna, Nigeria. It is one of the largest and densely populated areas in Nigeria, with an estimate of three million inhabitants It hosts villages, such as Danmani, Nariya, Makera, Mashi, Hayin Malam Bello, Sabon-garin Rigasa, Makarfi Road, Kwate, Mai-giginya, among others. Covering about 14 by 8 kilometers. Rigasa is one of the 255 wards The community has the largest public basic school in the sub-saharan Africa, initiated by his Excellency, Nasir Ahmed Elrufai. Also, it hosts the Kaduna-Abuja train station. It is believed that Rigasa hosts important dignitaries; such as the President of Universal Writers and Authors(UWA), Air Vice Marshal Maisaka(late), Former President of UWA, Chairman, Igabi Local Government, not to mention several Associate Professors and Doctors who are currently living within the community. Before the 2000 Religion crisis in Kaduna state, different tribes were living in Rigasa but presently, it is known as Hausa community.
On 28 March 2022, an Abuja–Kaduna train was attacked in Katari, Kaduna State, Nigeria. In response, the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC) briefly halted operations along the route.
On 10 April 2022, a gang of bandits killed more than 150 people in a series of attacks in Plateau State, Nigeria. The attacks are linked to the ongoing Nigerian bandit conflict. About 70 people were also kidnapped in the attacks.
The 2023 Nigerian presidential election in Kaduna State will be held on 25 February 2023 as part of the nationwide 2023 Nigerian presidential election to elect the president and vice president of Nigeria. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterward on 11 March.
Between December 19 and 25, 2022, several villages in Kagoro, Kaduna State, Nigeria were attacked by unknown groups, who killed over 46 people in two attacks.
Dogo Giɗe is a notorious Nigerian bandit who has committed several crimes against humanity, including kidnapping, raping, cattle rustling, and armed robbery. His criminal activities have particularly affected Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, and Kaduna States, resulting in countless loss of lives and the destruction of many villages in various parts of Northwestern and in some parts of the North Central region, such as Niger and Nasarawa State.
