The Israel Philatelic Federation is an association whose purpose is to nurture and promote philately in Israel.

Introduction

The Israel Philatelic Federation, which later became affiliated with the Fédération Internationale de Philatélie (FIP), was established in Tel Aviv, Israel on 11 April 1945. This came after the national philatelic exhibition "Fila 1945," organized by the Tel Aviv Philately Association. The federation collaborates closely with the Philatelic Service and receives support from the Israel Postal Company (formerly the Israel Postal Authority).

History

The Israel Philatelic Federation established its initial location in 1959 in Jerusalem. In June 1960 a Ghana exhibition was opened. [1] The museum continued to operate until 1963 in its original location. [2] In the early 1960s, the Israel Museum received a donation of a stamp collection from the estate of Mr. Spillman. The stamps were intended for display at the Museum of Science and Technology. [3] In July 1983, an agreement was signed between the Ministry of Communications and the Tel Aviv municipality to establish the Museum of Postal History within the museum, named after Jacob Agam's wife. [4] In September 1983, a cornerstone was laid for the museum. [5] Funding for the construction of the museum faced difficulties, and in September 1989, a ceremony was held to sign an agreement for funding the building. [6] Even this step was not sufficient, and in 1991, the Philatelic Service issued a special souvenir sheet, with all proceeds from its sale dedicated to completing the museum's construction. [7]

Opened on May 19, 1998 as part of the State of Israel's 50th Jubilee celebrations, [8] the Alexander Pavilion of Postal History and Philately is a permanent exhibition in the Eretz Israel Museum in Ramat Aviv. [9] . In 2024, a Google Map was prepared to mark all global locations that appear on Israeli stamps.

Virtual Stamp Exhibition

A tri-national virtual exhibition to promote collaboration between philatelists from the 3 nations, USA, UAE and Israel, that signed the Abraham Accords in August 2020 [10]

International activities

On the international level, the Israel Philatelic Federation organizes philatelic exhibitions, encourages the participation of Israeli philatelists in exhibitions abroad, and represents Israel in international professional committees.

The 2nd Maccabiah, aka the Aliyah Olympics, which was held in April 1935, was the second edition of the Maccabiah Games. The Games were held despite official opposition by the British Mandatory government. A total of 28 countries were represented by 1,350 athletes. Austria placed first, followed by Germany in second, with Eretz Israel placing third.

The 1st Maccabiah was the first edition of the Maccabiah, which was held in Mandatory Palestine from March 28 to April 2, 1932. The games were in commemoration of the 1800th anniversary of the Bar Kokhba revolt, a major rebellion by the Jews of Judaea Province against the Roman Empire. Despite many obstacles and setbacks, the first Maccabiah was regarded as a great success. Poland led the scoreboard, the United States was second, and Austria was third.

Pavol Steiner, also Pavel Steiner and Paul Steiner was a Czechoslovak Olympic water polo player and swimmer. He was also a cardiology surgeon. Steiner competed in the 1928 Summer Olympics in water polo, won a bronze medal at the 1931 European Aquatics Championships in swimming, and won five swimming gold medals and one water polo gold medal combined at the 1932 Maccabiah Games and 1935 Maccabiah Games in Mandatory Palestine.

The Har'el interchange was an interchange that connected Highway 1 and Road 3965 near the communities Mevaseret Zion and Motza Illit. The interchange was in the Diamond interchange type, whose bridge is built on the secondary road route and passes over Highway 1, where the traffic is continuous. The interchange opened to traffic in 1971, with the expansion project of Highway 1, which began in the late 1960s. The interchange is named after the Harel Brigade who fought in the area in the 1948 Palestine war.

The Shomrat gang rape was a series of sexual assaults which occurred in August 1988 at the kibbutz of Shomrat in Israel. The assaults were committed at various locations in and around the kibbutz and continued for a week. The victim was a 14-year-old girl from the kibbutz. The crime was committed by 11 rapists, including both teenage boys and adults, some of them members of Kibbutz Shomrat. The crime led to a change in Israeli law's treatment of rape, which now states that a man must seek and verify the express consent of a woman before having sexual contact with her and that if such permission is not given, it is rape.

Moshe Halevi (1895–1974) was an Israeli theatre director, founder of the Ohel theatre.
