Ituen Bassey trading as Ituen Basi is a Nigerian fashion designer. She has created costume designs for musical theatre as well as creating catwalk shows. She has worked in the UK and in Nigeria.

Bassey graduated in Nigeria in Theatre Arts at Obafemi Awolowo University before studying at the London School of Fashion. [1] She has worked as a designer in England and in Nigeria. [1] She did costume designs for the musicals 'Coloured Girls’, ‘HearWord’ [2] and ‘Saro the Musical’. [3] She started her (almost) eponymous label in 2006 [2] which was Ituen Basi. She is known for her use of Ankara wax print fabric. [4]

In 2019 she was unveiling her new collection at the Arise Fashion Week in Lagos where she was described as a "design veteran". [5]

The Ankara and Beads collection earned her “The Most Innovative Designer” award in 2009 and the following year she created the Independence collection. This show gained her the “Emerging Designer of the Year, Africa” award at the Africa Fashion Week, Johannesburg. The Love Series collection made her the “Most Creative Designer” at Arise Magazine Fashion Week and the Double Take collection made her Designer of the Year, Africa during the 2012 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Africa in Johannesburg.

Basi and Company was a Nigerian sitcom which ran from 1986 to 1990 on NTA, and was later syndicated across Africa. Written and produced by Ken Saro-Wiwa and filmed in Enugu, the show derived inspiration from African folklore and lampooned widespread corruption in oil-rich Nigeria while highlighting its consequences. To date, it remains one of Africa's most watched comedy programmes, with an estimated thirty million viewers during its peak.

Lanre da Silva is a Nigerian fashon designer based in Lagos. Launched in 2005, her eponymous label includes couture, ready-to-wear, jewelry and hairpieces. The Africa Fashion Guide recognizes her as having "... created a name for herself in high fashion in Nigeria."

African design encompasses many forms of expression and refers to the forms of design from the continent of Africa and the African diaspora including urban design, architectural design, interior design, product design, art, and fashion design. Africa's many diverse countries are sources of vibrant design with African design influences visible in historical and contemporary art and culture around the world. The study of African design is still limited, particularly from the viewpoint of Africans, and the opportunity to expand its current definition by exploring African visual representations and introducing contemporary design applications remains immense.

The fashion industry in Nigeria plays an important cultural role and contributes significantly to the country's economy. Casual attire is commonly worn but formal and traditional styles are also worn depending on the occasion. Clothing incorporates a variety of colors, fabrics, and embellishments. Many of the component cultures of Nigeria wear styles that are unique to their tribal society and customs. Nigeria is known not only for its fashionable textiles and garments but also for its fashion designers who have increasingly gained international recognition.

Zerina Akers is an American fashion stylist and costume designer. She is best known for her positions as Beyoncé's personal stylist, costume designer for the 2020 musical film Black Is King, and founder of the e-commerce site "Black Owned Everything".


Ojinika Anne Okpe, also known as Ojy Okpe, is a Nigerian model, film producer and TV anchor on Arise News, who hosts What's Trending with Ojy Okpe and co-anchors the Good Morning Show.
