Mircea Diaconu is a Romanian actor, writer, and politician. First appearing on stage in 1970, and on screen two years later, Diaconu pursued a lengthy career in both formats, working with a series of prominent directors. He acted in some sixty films through the 2000s, and continued to act in theatre during the ensuing decade. He took part in the Romanian Revolution of 1989. In 2008, he entered electoral politics, becoming a senator, and subsequently serving a term as a Member of the European Parliament. In 2019, he ran for president, placing fourth.

After a series of quick tactical victories on the numerically overpowered Austro-Hungarian forces in Transylvania, in the autumn of 1916, the Romanian Army suffered a series of devastating defeats, which forced the Romanian military and administration to withdraw to Western Moldavia, allowing the Central Powers to occupy two thirds of the national territory, including the state capital, Bucharest.

"Marș triumfal", or "Marș triumfal și primirea steagului și a Măriei Sale Prințul Domnitor" by its long name, was the first anthem of Romania. It is a piece without lyrics composed by Eduard Hübsch. In 1861, a contest was organized to decide the national anthem of the country with a prize of 100 golden coins. Hübsch was the winner, and the march was officially adopted on 22 January 1862.
