J-PAS (Javalambre Physics of the Accelerating universe Astrophysical Survey) is an astronomical survey [1] is being carried out by the Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre (OAJ), located in Pico del Buitre in Sierra de Javalambre, in Teruel, Spain. J-PAS officially started in the summer of 2023. [2]

OAJ is managed by Aragon Center for Physics of the Cosmos (CEFCA) and consists of two telescopes: a 2.5-metre primary mirror telescope (JST/T250) and an 80-centimeter telescope (JAST/T80). J-PAS is surveying the sky with JST/T250 telescope which has a 1.2 Giga-pixel camera, constituted by an array of 14 CCDs. J-PAS will observe more than 8000 square degrees (about 1/5 of the whole sky) in 57 filters during 5 to 6 years.

J-PAS filters cover the entire visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum (3500 Å to 10000 Å) [3] and can be classified as:

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Messier 87</span> Elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Galaxy Cluster

Messier 87 is a supergiant elliptical galaxy in the constellation Virgo that contains several trillion stars. One of the largest and most massive galaxies in the local universe, it has a large population of globular clusters—about 15,000 compared with the 150–200 orbiting the Milky Way—and a jet of energetic plasma that originates at the core and extends at least 1,500 parsecs, traveling at a relativistic speed. It is one of the brightest radio sources in the sky and a popular target for both amateur and professional astronomers.

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey or SDSS is a major multi-spectral imaging and spectroscopic redshift survey using a dedicated 2.5-m wide-angle optical telescope at Apache Point Observatory in New Mexico, United States. The project began in 2000 and was named after the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, which contributed significant funding.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">CfA 1.2 m Millimeter-Wave Telescope</span>

The 1.2 meter Millimeter-Wave Telescope at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian and its twin instrument at CTIO in Chile have been studying the distribution and properties of molecular clouds in our galaxy and its nearest neighbours since the 1970s. The telescope is nicknamed "The Mini" because of its unusually small size. At the time it was built, it was the smallest radio telescope in the world. Together, "The Mini" and its twin in Chile have obtained what is by far the most extensive, uniform, and widely used galactic survey of interstellar carbon monoxide. "The Mini" is currently in operation from October to May each year.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Eta Arietis</span> Star in the constellation Aries

Eta Arietis, Latinized from η Arietis, is the Bayer designation for a star in the northern constellation of Aries. It is dimly visible to the naked eye with an apparent visual magnitude of 5.231. With an annual parallax shift of 33.34 mas, the distance to this star is approximately 97.8 light-years. It is drifting further away with a radial velocity of +4.5 km/s.

The Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System located at Haleakala Observatory, Hawaii, US, consists of astronomical cameras, telescopes and a computing facility that is surveying the sky for moving or variable objects on a continual basis, and also producing accurate astrometry and photometry of already-detected objects. In January 2019 the second Pan-STARRS data release was announced. At 1.6 petabytes, it is the largest volume of astronomical data ever released.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vera C. Rubin Observatory</span> 8 meter astronomical survey telescope

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, previously referred to as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST), is an astronomical observatory currently under construction in Chile. Its main task will be carrying out a synoptic astronomical survey, the Legacy Survey of Space and Time. The word synoptic is derived from the Greek words σύν and ὄψις, and describes observations that give a broad view of a subject at a particular time. The observatory is located on the El Peñón peak of Cerro Pachón, a 2,682-meter-high mountain in Coquimbo Region, in northern Chile, alongside the existing Gemini South and Southern Astrophysical Research Telescopes. The LSST Base Facility is located about 100 kilometres (62 mi) away by road, in the town of La Serena. The observatory is named for Vera Rubin, an American astronomer who pioneered discoveries about galaxy rotation rates.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">NGC 7006</span> Globular cluster in the constellation Delphinus

NGC 7006 is a globular cluster in the constellation Delphinus. NGC 7006 resides in the outskirts of the Milky Way. It is about 135,000 light-years away, five times the distance between the Sun and the centre of the galaxy, and it is part of the galactic halo. This roughly spherical region of the Milky Way is made up of dark matter, gas and sparsely distributed stellar clusters.

A color–color diagram is a means of comparing the colors of an astronomical object at different wavelengths. Astronomers typically observe at narrow bands around certain wavelengths, and objects observed will have different brightnesses in each band. The difference in brightness between two bands is referred to as color. On color–color diagrams, the color defined by two wavelength bands is plotted on the horizontal axis, and the color defined by another brightness difference will be plotted on the vertical axis.

Tim Richard Walter Schrabback–Krahe is KIPAC Fellow at the Kavli Institute of Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, which is based at Stanford University. He is working within the X-ray Astronomy and Observational Cosmology Group. His research focuses on weak gravitational lensing and its applications for cosmology and astrophysics.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">MACS0647-JD</span> The farthest known galaxy from the Earth in the constellation Camelopardalis

MACS0647-JD is a galaxy with a redshift of about z = 10.7, equivalent to a light travel distance of 13.26 billion light-years. If the distance estimate is correct, it formed about 427 million years after the Big Bang.

SAO 206462 is a young star, surrounded by a circumstellar disc of gas and clearly defined spiral arms. It is situated about 440 light-years away from Earth in the constellation Lupus. The presence of these spiral arms seems to be related to the existence of planets inside the disk of gas surrounding the star. The disk's diameter is about twice the size of the orbit of Pluto.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre</span> Astronomical observatory in Spain

The Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre is a Spanish astronomical observatory located in the municipality of Arcos de las Salinas, Teruel. The facilities are located in the Pico del Buitre 1957 meters up in the Sierra de Javalambre. The observatory is managed by the Aragon Center for Physics of the Cosmos (CEFCA), dependent on the Department of Science, University and Knowledge Society Government of Aragon.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">SMACS J0723.3–7327</span> Galaxy cluster in the constellation Volans

SMACS J0723.3–7327, commonly referred to as SMACS 0723, is a galaxy cluster about 4 billion light years from Earth, within the southern constellation of Volans. It is a patch of sky visible from the Southern Hemisphere on Earth and often observed by the Hubble Space Telescope and other telescopes in search of the deep past. It was the target of the first full-color image to be unveiled by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), imaged using NIRCam, with spectra included, showing objects lensed by the cluster with redshifts implying they are 13.1 billion years old. The cluster has been previously observed by the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) as part of the Southern MAssive Cluster Survey (SMACS), as well as Planck and Chandra.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Centro de Estudios de Fisica del Cosmos de Aragon</span> Research institute, Spain

The Centro de Estudios de Física del Cosmos de Aragón (CEFCA) is a Research institute in Teruel, Spain. Established in 2008 as a private foundation of public initiative. by the Government of Aragon. Besides research in astronomy, and leading several large astronomical surveys, CEFCA is the operator of the Astrophysical Observatory of Javalambre. The primary research interests at CEFCA are in Stellar evolution, Time-domain astronomy and Galaxy evolution.

Ata Sarajedini is an astrophysicist, professional astronomer, academic, author, and podcaster. He is the Bjorn Lamborn Endowed Chair and Professor in Astrophysics at Florida Atlantic University.
