J. Douglas Cunningham

John Douglas Cunningham (born October 22, 1940 in Kingston, Ontario) is the former Associate Chief Justice of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice. [1] He is the son of D.G. (Ben) Cunningham and Isabelle Simpson.

Cunningham attended the University of Western Ontario for his B.A. and Queen's University, receiving his LL.B. He practised law from 1972 until 1991. He was an elected councillor of the City of Kingston. He was appointed to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 1991 and was elevated to Associate Chief Justice in 2002. [1] He is currently a Resident Arbitrator at Arbitration Place in Toronto.

In 2023, as an arbitrator, he finalized an asset splitting deal between the two former co-owners of Torstar, who had fallen out after their 2020 buyout of the company. [2]

Appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on June 1, 2007, Winkler was previously Regional Senior Judge of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice for the Toronto Region. Winkler reached the mandatory retirement age of 75 on December 10, 2013, and has since retired as the Chief Justice of Ontario. He served as Chair of the Order of Ontario Advisory Council. Mr. Winkler is now a Member Arbitrator at Arbitration Place in Toronto.

Gloria Jean Epstein is a former judge of the Court of Appeal for Ontario. She had also previously been appointed to the Court of Ontario. She is known for her 1999 trial ruling in M v H that Ontario's Family Law Act was unconstitutional for discriminating against same-sex couples by denying them the same benefits as legally-married heterosexual couples. Epstein's decision was appealed up to the Supreme Court of Canada and upheld.
