J Thomas & Co. Pvt. Ltd. is the largest and oldest existing tea auctioneers in the world, [1] [2] handling about 200 million kg of tea annually. The genesis of J Thomas was in Calcutta, the centre of tea trade in British India. The company is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, India and has branches in Siliguri, Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Kochi, Coonoor, Coimbatore and Bengaluru. [3]

In addition to that, tea cultivation was introduced to Greater Chittagong in 1840. Today, the country has 166 commercial tea estates, including many of the world's largest working plantations. The industry accounts for 3% of global tea production, and employs more than 4 million people.
