John Iain Stephen Sergeant (born 27 February 1995) is a Gibraltarian footballer who currently plays for Lincoln Red Imps and the Gibraltar national team, as a defender.
Sergeant appeared for Sevilla FC's youth setup, [2] and had a stint with Atlético Zabal [3] before graduating from AD Taraguilla. In the 2013 summer, he moved to Manchester 62. In summer 2016 he moved to England to study a fire and rescue management degree at Blackburn College [4] awarded by Lancaster University. [5]
On 17 August 2017 he signed for Lincoln Red Imps. On 30 October 2017, Sergeant signed for West Didsbury & Chorlton. [6] For his performances, in which he played 24 games for the club, [7] he was awarded Manager's Player of the Year in May 2018. [8] In July he briefly played for Lincoln Red Imps for their UEFA Europa League campaign before completing his spell at West. During his final year at the club, he shared a house in Hulme with international and West teammate Jamie Coombes. After spending a season at Europa upon his return to the Rock, in July 2020 he re-signed for Lincoln. [9]
After appearing and captaining the Gibraltar U19's, [10] Sergeant made his debut with the full squad on 19 November 2013, in a 0–0 draw against Slovakia. [11]
After being uncapped since 2016, when he moved to the UK, Sergeant returned to the national team in March 2018 for the friendly against Latvia. He played the full game, getting booked late on, as Gibraltar held on for a historic 1–0 victory. In doing so, he also set a record as first West Didsbury & Chorlton player to be capped while at the club in their 109-year history. [12] He captained the side for the first time in a 4–1 defeat to Montenegro on 27 March 2021. [13]

Lincoln Red Imps Football Club is a professional football club from Gibraltar. They play in the Gibraltar Football League, and share Victoria Stadium with all other clubs in the territory. They are the country's record champion with 27 league titles, including fourteen consecutive titles between 2003 and 2016, and in 2014 were the first team to represent Gibraltar in the UEFA Champions League's qualifying stage. In August 2021, Lincoln became the first club from Gibraltar to ever reach the group stages of a European club competition after defeating the Latvian champions Riga FC in the play-off round of the UEFA Europa Conference League.
West Didsbury & Chorlton Association Football Club is a semi-professional football club based in Chorlton-cum-Hardy, a suburb of Manchester, England. They are currently members of the North West Counties League Premier Division, the ninth tier of English football, and play at The Recreation Ground, currently known as The Step Places Stadium for sponsorship reasons, but mostly referred to as Brookburn Road. Nicknamed "West", the club was founded as Christ Church in 1908. In 1920, the club changed its name to West Didsbury, and after moving to their current stadium, Brookburn Road, in Chorlton in 1997 they changed their name to West Didsbury & Chorlton to reflect this.

The 2015–16 Gibraltar Premier Division was the 117th season of the national amateur and semi-professional football league in Gibraltar since its establishment - the highest level of football in Gibraltar. The league was contested by ten clubs, expanded from eight clubs in the last two seasons, including all clubs from last season and two promoted clubs from 2014–15 Gibraltar Second Division. The winner of the Gibraltar Premier Division, Lincoln Red Imps was allocated a spot in Champions League qualification, and as they won the Rock Cup a spot in the Europa League was given to the runners-up Europa FC.
Gibraltar became a full member of UEFA, the governing body of association football in Europe, on 24 May 2013. Teams from the territory can qualify for UEFA's two main continental competitions, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, and have entered since the 2014–15 season.
Lincoln Red Imps vs Celtic was a football match played on 12 July 2016 at Victoria Stadium, Gibraltar. The match was a UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie between Lincoln Red Imps, the champions of the 2015–16 Gibraltar Premier Division and Celtic, winners of the 2015–16 Scottish Premiership. The result, a 1–0 victory for Lincoln, is considered one of the greatest shocks in European football, and has been described by some media outlets as possibly Celtic's most humiliating defeat, dubbing it the Shock of Gibraltar.

The league is due to kick off in Autumn 2022. Lincoln Red Imps are the reigning champions, winning their second title in April 2022. Due to the league's fall down the UEFA coefficient rankings, this season only 2 teams will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League.
