Hofstra University is a private university in Hempstead, New York. It is Long Island's largest private university, Hofstra originated in 1935 as an extension of New York University (NYU) under the name Nassau College – Hofstra Memorial of New York University at Hempstead, Long Island. It became an independent Hofstra College in 1939 and gained university status in 1963. Comprising ten schools, including the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and Deane School of Law, Hofstra has hosted a series of prominent presidential conferences and several United States presidential debates.
Craig Elliott "Speedy" Claxton is an American former professional basketball player and the current head coach of the Hofstra University men's basketball team. Claxton won an NBA championship in 2003 as a member of the San Antonio Spurs. In 2013, he was named as a special assistant to the head coach for the Hofstra University men's basketball program, before being hired as head coach in 2021.
Frank John Catalanotto is an American baseball coach and former infielder and left fielder, who is the current head baseball coach of the Hofstra Pride. Catalanotto played professional baseball for the Detroit Tigers (1997–1999), the Texas Rangers, the Toronto Blue Jays (2003–2006), the Milwaukee Brewers (2009) and the New York Mets (2010). In his career, Catalanotto played all infield and outfield positions except shortstop and center field He then went on to be the head baseball coach of the NYIT Bears (2019–2020).

The Hofstra Pride are composed of 17 teams representing Hofstra University in intercollegiate athletics, including men and women’s basketball, cross-country running, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis and track and field. Men’s sports include baseball and wrestling. Women’s sports include volleyball, field hockey, and softball. The Pride compete in the NCAA Division I and have been members of the Colonial Athletic Association in most sports since 2001. They were previously members of the America East Conference.

The team has won the America East tournament six times in 2004, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2019. In 2011, the Seawolves claimed their first America East regular season championship. Stony Brook has participated in the NCAA Tournament on six separate occasions, winning their first game in 2010.

The Maryland Terrapins baseball team is the varsity intercollegiate baseball program of University of Maryland, College Park in College Park, Maryland, United States. The program's first season was in 1893, and it has been a member of the NCAA Division I Big Ten Conference since the start of the 2015 season. Its home venue is Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium, located on Maryland's campus. Rob Vaughn is the team's head coach starting in the 2018 season. The program has appeared in 6 NCAA Tournaments. It has won zero conference tournament championships and 4 regular season conference titles. As of the start of the 2021 Major League Baseball season, 38 former Terrapins have appeared in Major League Baseball.
John Russo is an American baseball coach. He graduated from the University of West Alabama in 2000. Russo served as an assistant coach at West Alabama while completing a degree in secondary education and a concentration in physical education. He worked with the Tigers hitters from 1998 until his graduation in 2000, helping them set several program records. He then moved to Saint Joseph's in Rensselaer, Indiana, serving as infield coach and academic advisor for his five seasons. From 2005 to 2008, Russo worked as a teacher and athletic director in Wadsworth, Illinois. During his summers, Russo coached the Vermont Mountaineers of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. He led the Mountaineers to the 2006 and 2007 NECBL Championship. In 2008, Russo earned the top assistant coaching position at Hofstra Pride. After Patrick Anderson's resignation to work for the Hagerstown Suns just before the 2012, season, Russo became interim head coach, and was named to the position permanently after leading the Pride to a second-place finish in the CAA.

The 2018–19 Hofstra Pride women's basketball team represents Hofstra University during the 2018–19 NCAA Division I women's basketball season. The Pride, led by thirteenth year head coach Krista Kilburn-Steveskey, play their home games at Hofstra Arena and are members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA). They finished the season 11–22, 3–15 in CAA play to finish in a tie for last place. They advanced to the quarterfinals of the CAA Women's Tournament where they lost to James Madison.
Shannon Elizabeth Smith is an American lacrosse coach and former player. Smith concluded her collegiate career at Northwestern University as their all-time leading goal scorer with 254, three-time IWLCA first-team All-American, three-time All-ALC first-team choice, and a two-time MVP of the NCAA Championship.
