Robinson broke the color line when he started at first base for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947. The Dodgers signing Robinson heralded the end of racial segregation in professional baseball, which had relegated black players to the Negro leagues since the 1880s.

Francis Joseph "Shag" Shaughnessy was an American athlete and sports executive. Shaughnessy played both baseball and football and was an executive in baseball, football and ice hockey. He was born in the United States and moved to Canada in the 1910s, where he was involved with football and ice hockey teams in Montreal and Ottawa. He was later president of the International League of baseball. His son Frank Shaughnessy Jr. also played football and ice hockey, and played ice hockey for the United States in the 1936 Winter Olympics.

Michael Shane Hollis is an American former professional football player who was a placekicker in the National Football League (NFL) from 1994 to 2003. He led the NFL in scoring and becoming the most accurate kicker in NFL history during that time. He spent most of his nine-year NFL career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, kicking for the team from 1995–2001 and setting several team records. He then played for the Buffalo Bills and New York Giants before initially retiring after an injury in 2003. He signed with the Jacksonville Sharks in 2022 after almost 20 years of retirement.

He served as the head football coach at Northern Illinois State Normal School—now known as Northern Illinois University—from 1906 to 1909, compiling a record of 8–17–3. Kellogg was also the head basketball coach at Northern Illinois from 1906 to 1910, amassing a record of 17–27, and the head baseball coach at the school from 1907 to 1910, tallying a mark of 26–17. He ran track at the University of Michigan, from which he graduated in 1904.

Originally from Tampa, Florida, Washington played college football at Mississippi Valley State. A native of Vancouver, Washington, he played college football at Eastern Washington—then Eastern Washington State College—from 1963 to 1966 as a safety and fullback for the Savages, then an NAIA program in the Evergreen Conference.
