The Central Savannah River Area (CSRA) is an unofficial trading and marketing region in the U.S. states of Georgia and South Carolina, spanning thirteen counties in Georgia and seven in South Carolina. The term was coined in 1950 by C.C. McCollum, the winner of a $250 contest held by The Augusta Chronicle to generate the best name for the area. Today the initialism is so commonly used that the full name is not known to all CSRA residents. The region is located on and named after the Savannah River, which forms the border between the two states. The largest cities within the CSRA are Augusta, Georgia and Aiken, South Carolina.
WRMK-LP is a low power broadcasting radio station in Augusta, Georgia. The station is licensed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to broadcast with an effective radiated power (ERP) of 100 watts. The station is co-located with Good News Church at 400 Warren Road, Augusta, Georgia. The FM signal covers a radius of four to six miles around the transmitter location on Warren Rd which allows the station to cover a majority of Augusta/Richmond County and parts of Columbia County, Georgia; as well as a small portion of Aiken County, South Carolina. William Gaines (1824–1865) was a freed slave, minister, and community representative in Savannah, Georgia. He was one of the 20 Black church leaders—alongside Garrison Frazier, Ulysses L. Houston, and James D. Lynch—who met with Major General William Tecumseh Sherman and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton in Savannah on January 12, 1865 about 3 months before the end of the American Civil War. This meeting took place at the Green–Meldrim House, and their discussion directly led to Sherman's Special Field Orders No. 15, which included the famous Forty acres and a mule land allotment.
Bishop Wesley John Gaines was an African-American church and community leader in Georgia. He was vice president of Payne Theological Seminary and co-founder of Morris Brown College.
