Jaelem Bhate is a Canadian conductor, composer, and bandleader from Vancouver, British Columbia. He received his Master of Music degree in Orchestral Conducting at the University of British Columbia in 2019 under the guidance of Dr. Jonathan Girard. He previously received his undergraduate degree in percussion performance at UBC where he graduated first in his class and received the prestigious Wesbrook Award for academic achievement and leadership. He has also studied with Cristian Măcelaru, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Marin Alsop, Boris Brott, Gerard Schwarz, [1] and Fred Stride. [2]

Bhate has performed with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra, Kamloops Symphony, Nanaimo Symphony, and the Vancouver Island Symphony. He is the current director of the Vancouver Brass Collective, the Jaelem Bhate Jazz Orchestra, as well as the artistic director of Symphony 21, [3] an ensemble which he founded. [2] In 2024, Bhate was announced as the new Music Director for the Prince Edward Island Symphony Orchestra [4] . Bhate is also a current faculty member at the University of British Columbia. [5]

Bhate was named to the CBC's 2019 '30 under 30 hot classical musicians. [6] He has released two albums with the Jaelem Bhate Jazz Orchestra; On the Edge, and Carmen, a reimagining of Bizet’s operatic masterpiece for jazz ensemble. On the Edge won the 2020 Julian Award for emerging Canadian jazz excellence. [7]

Early life and education

Bhate was raised in Richmond, British Columbia. He attended Hugh Boyd Secondary School [8] where he began drumming in rock and jazz ensembles, considering music only as a hobby, going on to pursue a degree in sciences at the University of British Columbia. Bhate later began pursuing music academically when he was asked to chaperone for his former secondary school band and was elected to conduct when their instructor was absent. Bhate then transferred in his second year to pursue an undergraduate degree in Music, followed by a Masters of Music in Orchestral Conducting. [9] Bhate currently resides in Richmond with his dog, Jazz. Bhate currently enjoys golf, gardening and Star Wars media.

Brent Lee is a Canadian composer and professor of Music Composition at the University of Windsor. Growing up, he studied guitar and saxophone. He received a Bachelor's (1986) and Master's (1990) degree in Music Composition from McGill University in Montreal. Brent showed interest in both computer and electroacoustic music. While still a student, he was awarded several composition prizes through CAPAC and SOCAN, and was one of six young composers to receive a Residency Prize at the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Festival in 1988.

Chan Ka Nin is a Canadian composer and music educator of Chinese descent. He became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1971. The Richmond Delta Youth Orchestra (RDYO) is an orchestral training program for young musicians located in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. The RDYO was formerly known as the Delta Youth Orchestra. The name was changed in March 2013. In September 2014 moved its base to Richmond, British Columbia. It previously rehearsed at the Ladner Community Centre, 4734 - 51st Street, Delta, British Columbia. The RDYO is sponsored by the BC Youth Music Society (formerly the Delta Symphony Society which is a registered non-profit charity and the society provides this orchestral and chamber music training program for young musicians from ages 5 to 24 years. The Orchestra was founded in 1971 by Harry Gomez, Fred Preuss, Charles Glushka, Anita Sleeman, and Aileen Docherty.

Previously, he was assistant conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and a professor at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. Lin was born in New Jersey and moved to Taiwan at age six. In 2008, while attending National Taiwan Normal University, he founded the Chamber Philharmonic Taipei. Lin has conducted ensembles in Europe, Latin America, East Asia, and the United States, including the Taipei Symphony Orchestra, Cincinnati Ballet, Manchester Camerata, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra, and Richmond Symphony Orchestra of Indiana.
