Jaime Rene Morales Carazo (born 10 September 1936) is a Nicaraguan politician who was the Vice President of Nicaragua between January 2007 and January 2012.
Born to Carlos A. Morales Casco and Anita Carazo Arellano in Granada,Nicaragua, [1] he obtained a degree in Industrial Relations at the American Institute of Higher Business Management (IPADE-Universidad Panamericana,Mexico). Morales has been active in financial and business circles,entering politics after 1980. In the mid-1960s,he established the Nicaraguan Bank Group (BANIC),the first private banking investment and development firm in Nicaragua,which eventually became one of the largest of its kind in Central America. He also worked at the Institute for National Development (INFONAC) as a vice president.
He also co-founded the Central American University (UCA) and its Faculty of Economics and Management,whose board he subsequently joined. He participated in the promotion of the American Institute of Business Administration,and helped establish the National Technological Institute (INTECNA) of Granada.
From July 1979,Morales Carazo lived in Honduras and Mexico. In 1983 he became involved with the Nicaraguan Democratic Front (NDF),later known as the Nicaraguan Resistance. He was a Chief Negotiator in the Sapoa peace process with the government of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN). He returned to Nicaragua in 1996.
In 1993 he was responsible for the development of statutes for the Liberal Constitutionalist Party (PLC),re-written on the occasion of the Party's centenary celebration. In 1996 he was Head of Campaign for the PLC and the Liberal Alliance that won the national elections. In November 2001 he was elected National Deputy to the Legislative Assembly as a member of the Blue and White Bench,serving for five years as President of the Commission on the Environment and Natural Resources. During the administration of 1997–2001 he was Personal Adviser with the rank of Minister of the President and Chairman of the National Council for Sustainable Development (CONADES).
He was the campaign manager for the Liberal Alliance,whose presidential candidate was his godson Arnoldo Alemán,for the 1996 elections. [1]
On May 28,2006,Morales Carazo accepted the nomination to run for the vice presidency,as a running mate to Daniel Ortega,the FSLN and the Alliance "Unity Nicaragua Triumphs". Ortega went on to win the national election held on November 5,2006. Morales Carazo assumed the position of Vice President on January 10,2007.
After leaving office,Morales Carazo was sworn in as Member of the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN) at a special event at the headquarters of the regional forum in Guatemala. He was sworn in by Manolo Pichardo. [2]
JoséDaniel Ortega Saavedra is a Nicaraguan politician who has been President of Nicaragua since 2007. Previously he was leader of Nicaragua from 1979 to 1990,first as coordinator (1979–1985) of the Junta of National Reconstruction,and then as President of Nicaragua (1985–1990). During his first term,he implemented policies to achieve leftist reforms across Nicaragua. In later years,Ortega's left-wing radical politics cooled significantly,leading him to pursue pro-business policies and even rapprochement with the Catholic Church. As a part of this,his government adopted strong anti-abortion policies,and his rhetoric took on a new,strongly religious tenor.

The Constitutionalist Liberal Party is a political party in Nicaragua. At the Nicaraguan general election of 5 November 2006,the party won 25 of 92 seats in the National Assembly. However,the party suffered a devastating loss in the 2011 general election,losing 23 seats in the National Assembly.

Sergio Ramírez Mercado is a Nicaraguan writer and intellectual who was a key figure in 1979 revolution,served in the leftist Government Junta of National Reconstruction and as vice president of the country 1985–1990 under the presidency of Daniel Ortega. He has been described as Nicaragua's "best-known living writer". Since the 1990s,he has been involved in the left-wing opposition to the Nicaraguan government,in particular in the Movimiento de Renovación Sandinista. He was exiled from the country in 2021 and stripped of his nationality by the government in 2023.

Eduardo Montealegre Rivas is a Nicaraguan politician. He ran for president in the 2006 general election as the candidate of the Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance (ALN-PC) a split-off of the Constitutional Liberal Party (PLC) in alliance with other liberal parties and the Conservative Party. He finished in second place after Daniel Ortega,receiving 28.3% of the vote.
Tomás Borge Martínez,often spelled as Thomas Borge in American newspapers,was a cofounder of the Sandinista National Liberation Front in Nicaragua and was Interior Minister of Nicaragua during one of the administrations of Daniel Ortega. He was also a renowned statesman,writer,and politician. Tomás Borge also held the titles of "Vice-Secretary and President of the FSLN",member of the Nicaraguan Parliament and National Congress,and Ambassador to Peru. Considered a hardliner,he led the "prolonged people's war" tendency within the FSLN until his death.
The Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance is a political coalition in Nicaragua. It was started in 2005 by Eduardo Montealegre and other members of the Constitutional Liberal Party who opposed former President of the country Arnoldo Alemán's continued control of the PLC even after he had been found guilty of misuse of public funds,and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Montealegre also opposed the political alliance,commonly referred to as 'El Pacto',between Alemán as head of the PLC and Daniel Ortega,head of the Sandinist National Liberation Front.
The Independent Liberal Party is a Nicaraguan political party,which separated from Somoza's Nationalist Liberal Party (PLN) in 1944 and took part in the probably fraudulent election of 1947,won by Somoza's favored candidate. The PLI participated in the 1984 election,winning 9.6% of vote for President with its candidate Virgilio Godoy. In 1990 it was part of the National Opposition Union (UNO) - a broad alliance of Sandinista regime opponents - with Virgilio Godoy running as the vice-presidential candidate. UNO won the elections with 54% of the vote. The UNO alliance split in 1993,and in the 1996 elections the PLI,under the candidature of Virgilio Godoy,suffered its worst electoral debacle,receiving only 0.32% of the vote. It joined with Enrique Bolaños' PLC for the 2001 elections,and was part of Montealegre's Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance in the 2006 elections.

Convergencia Nacional or the National Convergence alliance was a coalition of a number of Nicaraguan political organizations,formed in support of Daniel Ortega's bid in the presidential election of 2001. Despite losing the presidential election,the FSLN-led alliance made steady gains in the 2004 municipal elections,and Ortega was elected president in 2006. The alliance included Ortega's FSLN,Nationalist Liberal Party,Popular Conservative Alliance,Marxist–Leninist Popular Action Movement,Nicaraguan Christian Democratic Union,as well as the Unidad Social Cristiana PUSC and dissident minority factions of the Sandinista Renovation Movement,Nicaraguan Liberal Alliance,Constitutionalist Liberal Party,Nicaraguan Resistance Party and YATAMA. Majority factions of the latter 6 organizations have joined the anti-Ortega coalition Alianza PLC founded in 2008.

Incumbent President Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) was re-elected for a third consecutive term amid charges he and the FSLN used their control of state resources to bypass constitutional term limits and hamstring political rivals. The FSLN benefited from strong economic growth and relatively low levels of crime compared to neighbouring countries.
Miriam Argüello Morales was a politician from Nicaragua. A lawyer by training,she was the first woman to become president of the National Assembly of Nicaragua,where she served as a deputy for 22 years. She was elected Assembly president in 1990,defeating Alfredo César Aguirre though he had the support of Nicaraguan President Violeta Chamorro. However,César prevailed the following year,replacing Argüello in 1991.
