Air Marshal (retd.) Jamal Uddin Ahmed is a former Chief of Air Staff, the highest appointment in the Bangladesh Air Force (BAF), and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of Biman Bangladesh. [1] He was promoted to Air Marshal by then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the day of his retirement from the BAF in 2001. Three years later, the Khaleda Zia government voided his promotion, declaring it unlawful because there was no such post in the BAF's organizational chart. [2] He appealed the decision to the High Court, which in 2008 restored his rank of air marshal, ruling that he had been stripped of it illegally. [3]

Career

He started his career as a Martin B-57 Canberra attack pilot in the Pakistan Air Force in 1964. During the Liberation War in 1971, he was a Flight Lieutenant and part of a joint NATO-CENTO Air Intelligence Training Program for NATO Air Force officers in the United States. He returned to Bangladesh in 1972 as a Squadron Leader and served as a flight instructor at the Bangladesh Air Force Academy between 1976 and 1980. [4] [5] He was the Chief of Air Staff from 4 June 1995 to 3 June 2001. [6]

Biman Bangladesh Airlines commonly known as Biman, pronounced, is the national flag carrier of Bangladesh. With its main hub at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, the airline also operates flights from its secondary hubs at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chittagong and as well as Osmani International Airport in Sylhet. The airline provides international passenger and cargo services to multiple destinations and has air service agreements in 42 countries. The headquarters of the airline, Balaka Bhaban, is located in Kurmitola, in the northern part of Dhaka. Annual Hajj flights, transporting tourists, migrants, and non-resident Bangladeshi workers and the activities of its subsidiaries form an integral part of the corporate business of the airline. Bangladesh's air transport sector, which is experiencing an 8% annual growth rate thanks to a large number of outbound tourists, domestic tourists, and non-resident Bangladeshi travelers, is very competitive with stiff competition among a number of private Bangladeshi airlines as well as Biman.

The Chief Of Air Staff is the professional head and highest appointment of the Bangladesh Air Force. Only pilots get this post. The appointment is held by a four-star air officer and the current COAS is Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan. Prior to 2016, from 2007 the appointment was held by an Air Marshal and from 1972 to 2007 COAS's rank was Air Vice Marshal.

Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar, BBP, NDC, ACSC was the 14th Chief of the Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. He took over as the chief on 12 June 2015 from Air Marshal Enamul Bari. He is the first four-star air officer of Bangladesh. He was promoted to ACM on 16 January 2016.

Air Vice Marshal (retd.) Abdul Ghaffar Mahmud is a former chief of the Bangladesh Air Force. He negotiated the release of hostages from the hijacked Japan Airlines Flight 472. For his role in keeping the situation under control and securing the lives of every single passenger, Japanese government had conferred upon him the "Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star" awards.

Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat, BBP, OSP, ndu, psc was the 15th Chief of the Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. He took over as the chief on 12 June 2018 from Air Chief Marshal Abu Esrar. He was promoted to Air Marshal on the same day. He was promoted to the rank of ACM on 30 July 2018.

Shaikh Abdul Hannan is a four-star Air chief marshal and the current Chief of Air Staff of the Bangladesh Air Force. On 12 June 2021, Hannan took over command of the Bangladesh Air Force from his predecessor Masihuzzaman Serniabat.

Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Mafidur Rahman is a Bangladesh Air Force officer and Incumbent Chairman of Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh. Prior to this appointment, he was the air officer commanding at two important air bases namely BAF Base Bangabandhu, Kurmitola, Dhaka and BAF Base Zahurul Haque, Patenga, Chattogram.

Air Vice Marshal Md Shafiqul Alam BBP, OSP, BSP, ndc, fawc, psc is the incumbent Assistant Chief of Air Staff. Earlier, he was Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Plans). He also served as Air Officer Commanding of Bangladesh Air Force (BAF) Base Bashar.
