William Jennings Jefferson is an American former politician from Louisiana whose career ended after his corruption scandal and conviction. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for nine terms from 1991 to 2009 as a member of the Democratic Party. Kenneth Lee Lay was an American businessman who was the founder,chief executive officer and chairman of Enron. He was heavily involved in Enron's accounting scandal that unraveled in 2001 into the largest bankruptcy ever to that date. Lay was indicted by a grand jury and was found guilty of 10 counts of securities fraud at trial. Lay died in July 2006 while vacationing in his house near Aspen,Colorado,three months before his scheduled sentencing. A preliminary autopsy reported Lay died of a heart attack caused by coronary artery disease. His death resulted in a vacated judgment. Conspiracy theories regarding Lay's death surfaced,alleging that it was faked.
Racial tension in Omaha,Nebraska occurred mostly because of the city's volatile mixture of high numbers of new immigrants from southern and eastern Europe and African-American migrants from the Deep South. While racial discrimination existed at several levels,the violent outbreaks were within working classes. Irish Americans,the largest and earliest immigrant group in the 19th century,established the first neighborhoods in South Omaha. All were attracted by new industrial jobs,and most were from rural areas. There was competition among ethnic Irish,newer European immigrants,and African-American migrants from the South,for industrial jobs and housing. They all had difficulty adjusting to industrial demands,which were unmitigated by organized labor in the early years. Some of the early labor organizing resulted in increasing tensions between groups,as later arrivals to the city were used as strikebreakers. In Omaha as in other major cities,racial tension has erupted at times of social and economic strife,often taking the form of mob violence as different groups tried to assert power. Much of the early violence came out of labor struggles in early 20th century industries:between working class ethnic whites and immigrants,and blacks of the Great Migration. Meatpacking companies had used the latter for strikebreakers in 1917 as workers were trying to organize. As veterans returned from World War I,both groups competed for jobs. By the late 1930s,however,interracial teams worked together to organize the meatpacking industry under the United Packinghouse Workers of America (UPWA). Unlike the AFL and some other industrial unions in the CIO,UPWA was progressive. It used its power to help end segregation in restaurants and stores in Omaha,and supported the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Women labor organizers such as Tillie Olsen and Rowena Moore were active in the meatpacking industry in the 1930s and 1940s,respectively.
Tom Dennison,known as Pickhandle or Old Grey Wolf,was an American political boss and racketeer in Omaha,Nebraska. A politically savvy,culturally astute gambler,Dennison was in charge of the city's wide crime rings,including prostitution,gambling and bootlegging in the 1920s. Dennison is credited with electing "Cowboy" James Dahlman mayor of Omaha eight times,and when losing an election,inciting the Omaha Race Riot of 1919 in retribution against the candidate who won.

Arthur J. Hanes served as mayor of Birmingham,Alabama,between 1961 and 1963,a tumultuous time that saw the city become a focal point in the burgeoning Civil Rights Movement during the Birmingham campaign. Hanes,who served just one term as mayor,was part of a three-man commission that ran the city,a trio which included police commissioner Eugene (Bull) Connor. Hanes would also serve as legal counsel for defendants in two important murder cases connected to the civil rights movement.
William Jackson "Jack" Marion was an American man who was convicted of the 1872 murder of John Cameron,a Kansas native and a friend. Marion and Cameron were railroad workers who embarked on a trip to Kansas to work on the railroad in 1872. During the trip,Cameron went missing,spurring an investigation into his whereabouts. In 1873,a decomposing body was discovered in a Nebraska riverbed wearing clothing that some claimed to have belonged to Cameron,leading authorities to believe that Marion may have murdered Cameron. Years later,following a two-month trial and conviction,the state of Nebraska executed Marion for Cameron's murder in 1887.
Emmett Louis Murphy was an attorney and civic leader from Omaha,Nebraska. He served as assistant attorney general from 1937 to 1945,was federal bankruptcy referee from 1950 to 1962,and was on the board of directors of the National Association of Referees in Bankruptcy from 1957 to 1962. He was the governor of the Nebraska-Iowa district of the Kiwanis club in 1948 and vice-president of Omaha Catholic Charities in 1949 and 1950.
John Ellsworth Murphy was a lawyer and judge in Omaha,Nebraska. From 1960 to 1978 he served as a judge on the district 8 court of Nebraska. The most notable cases over which he presided were the bribery cases against then Mayor James Dworak and four others and a murder case against Robert Julian Jacobs. Also,he was the judge who heard the first part of the legal battle that occurred when Omaha annexed the town of Millard in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
David Alan Domina is an American lawyer and politician from Nebraska. A member of the Democratic Party,he was involved in a number of high-profile legal cases,including the impeachment of Nebraska Attorney General Paul L. Douglas in 1986,and that of University of Nebraska regent David Hergert in 2006. Beginning in 2012,he represented opponents of the Keystone XL pipeline in contesting a legislative measure relating to the use of eminent domain for the pipeline.
John Adams Sr. was an American minister,lawyer,and politician and a member of the unicameral Nebraska Legislature. He was born in Atlanta,Georgia,was a lawyer and minister in South Carolina,Washington state,and Colorado before settling in Omaha,Nebraska. While in South Carolina he took a civil rights case to the U.S. Supreme Court where he lost. He was the only black member of the Nebraska unicameral for much of his tenure from 1949 to 1962. He was an ordained minister and at the time of his death was presiding elder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME). As a legislator,he was an outspoken champion of civil rights and fought for fair employment practices and pensions for retired teachers.
Jasiel F. Correia II is a former mayor of Fall River,Massachusetts. He was arrested twice on charges related to fraud and extortion while in office. Defeated in the November 2019 mayoral election,his term expired on January 6,2020. In May 2021,Correia was convicted of multiple federal charges in a trial held in Boston;on September 21,2021,Correia was sentenced to six years in federal prison followed by three years of supervised release. On April 22,2022,Correia reported to a Federal Correctional Institution to begin serving his six-year sentence.
On June 24,1969,Vivian Strong,a 14-year-old African American girl,was killed in Omaha,Nebraska,United States,when a white police officer shot her in the back of the head without warning. The white police officer,and his Black partner,had been dispatched to the location because there were "juveniles breaking in." When they arrived at the scene a small group of teenagers fled out of an abandoned apartment where they had been dancing. The killing sparked three days of riots in Omaha's predominantly African-American Northeast neighborhood.
The 1970 Newark mayoral election was held on June 16,1970. Incumbent mayor Hugh Addonizio ran for a third term in office but was defeated by civil engineer Kenneth A. Gibson. Gibson became the first black man elected mayor of a major city in the Northeastern United States or Eastern Seaboard.
