James W. Byrd (born March 14,1954) is an American politician and former Democratic member of the Wyoming House of Representatives,representing the 44th district from 2009 to 2019. His mother,Harriet Elizabeth Byrd previously held the same seat from 1980 to 1988,and was the first African-American to serve in the Wyoming State Legislature. [1] Byrd retired from his House of Representatives seat to run for Wyoming Secretary of State shortly after Republican incumbent Ed Murray resigned, [2] but lost the November 2018 election to Murray's successor Edward Buchanan.
Crook County is a county in the northeastern corner of the U.S. state of Wyoming. As of the 2020 United States Census,the population was 7,181,making it the third-least populous county in Wyoming. Its county seat and largest city is Sundance. The county is located at the northwestern extreme of the Black Hills,which are its defining geographical feature.

Cannabis is strictly illegal in Wyoming. The state has some of the strictest cannabis laws in the United States. Cannabis itself is not allowed for medical purposes,but a 2015 law allows limited use of non-psychoactive Cannabidiol. Incumbent Republican governor Matt Mead was term-limited and could not seek a third consecutive term. Republican nominee Mark Gordon defeated Democratic nominee Mary Throne by nearly 40 percentage points.
The 2020 United States Senate election in Wyoming was held on November 3,2020,to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the State of Wyoming,concurrently with the 2020 U.S. presidential election,as well as other elections to the United States Senate in other states and elections to the United States House of Representatives and various state and local elections. Cynthia Lummis defeated Democrat Merav Ben-David by more than 46 percentage points,becoming the first female U.S. Senator from Wyoming and succeeding fellow Republican Mike Enzi,who did not run for reelection. This was the first open Senate seat since 1996,when Enzi was first elected. The Democratic and Republican party primary elections were held on August 18,2020. This was the first time since 1996 that Democrats won any county for this seat. Enzi died aged 77 on July 26,2021,from injuries in a bicycle accident,less than seven months after his retirement from the Senate.
