Jamestown Art Center (JAC) is a non-profit arts organization with a gallery, art studios, education facilities, and event space in a renovated boat repair shop, located at 18 Valley Street in Jamestown, Rhode Island.

The organization's non-profit mission is to engage, enrich and inspire the community through extraordinary arts and educational experiences.

The JAC is operated by a volunteer Board of Directors, an Executive Director, and a staff of administrators, educators and volunteers. It is supported by philanthropic contributions and a membership program that includes supporters and affiliated artists. [1]

The Jamestown Arts Center presents free art exhibitions in its galleries year-round, as well as outdoor sculptures and murals at its site, and a Biennial Outdoor Arts Experience exhibition of outdoor artworks throughout the town of Jamestown RI. Exhibitions have included the work of internationally exhibited artists such as Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, Aboudia, Leslie Dill, Edwin Schlossberg, and Glenn Ligon. [2]

The JAC offers arts education for people of all ages, providing a year-round schedule of classes, camps, and workshops for children, teens, and adults.

History

The arts center was founded by a group of Jamestown, RI community members in 2007. [3] In December 2009, the Jamestown Arts Center purchased a building at 18-24 Valley Street the renovated studio and gallery space opened on April 1, 2011. [4] The JAC was awarded Best Art Gallery in Newport County by Rhode Island Monthly Magazine's Best of Rhode Island. The JAC was awarded $15,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts in 2018 and $50,000 in 2020. [5]

Events

The Jamestown Arts Center's multi-disciplinary facility hosts theater, dance, and musical performances as well as film screenings. The Jamestown Arts Center is a host site for the Manhattan Short Film Festival, the Southeast New England Film, Music & Arts Festival, the Art & Design Film Festival, and the Rhode Island Film Festival and its October sidebar, the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival. The JAC also presents the Kingston Chamber Music Festival and performances by the Heifetz International Music Institute. [6]

AS220 is a non-profit community arts center located in Downtown, Providence, Rhode Island, United States. He is noted for a body of work incorporating the seafarer's craft with nautical history, as well as the host of a series of illegal clambakes on the Brooklyn waterfront for the New York artistic community. Riley told the Village Voice that he has "always been interested in the space where water meets land in the urban landscape."

He is known for being a founder and long-time artistic director of the non-profit arts organization, AS220, in Providence, Rhode Island. He has been credited with helping to "lay the groundwork for much of the cultural development that shaped the Providence imaginary in the 1990s and early decades of the 21st century" by scholar Micah Salkind, and in 2010 was identified as one of Rhode Island's Most Influential People by Rhode Island Monthly.

Ara Peterson is an American visual artist. He is known for his music-based films as well as interlaced relief paintings and sculptures, which are rooted in wave patterns and a process-intensive work ethic. Peterson was a founding member of the art collective Forcefield and is based in Providence, Rhode Island.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Richard Whitten</span> American painter

Richard Whitten is a painter and sculptor of mixed Asian and American ancestry working in Rhode Island. His early work could loosely be termed geometric abstractions, but he is best known for his later representational paintings that combine an interest in architecture, invented machinery and toys. Whitten is also known for his toy-like sculptures. Whitten was the chair of the art department at Rhode Island College (2016-2018) and continues to teach there as part of the faculty.

Herbert "Herb" P. Weiss is an American author and journalist. He is best known for his work as a writer and as an arts and cultural ambassador for the city of Pawtucket.

The Wayne Art Center is a non-profit art center in Wayne, Pennsylvania that has offered classes, lectures, events and exhibitions for more than 90 years.
