Jan Dijkema (born 23 September 1944) is a Dutch politician,sociologist and President of the International Skating Union. [1] [2]
Dijkema studied sociology at the University of Groningen and was at the age of 32 in 1978 the youngest Member of the Dutch government. In the province of Overijssel he was then a Member of the provincial government for Economic Affairs as representative on behalf of the PvdA,where he was confronted with the restructuring of Twente after the textile crisis:"We were able to do a lot with European funds." In addition,Dijkema was closely involved in financing the IJsbaan Twente as a member of the recommendation committee. [3] In 1994 he exchanged politics for skating as a vice-president at the Royal Dutch Skating Association (KNSB). In that capacity,he became a representative at the International Skating Union (ISU). From 1994 to 2010 he held the position of ISU board member. In 2010,he became vice president of speed skating at ISU with speed skating and short track disciplines in the portfolio.
In 2016 Dijkema was elected president of the International Skating Union during the congress in Dubrovnik as successor to the retiring Italian Ottavio Cinquanta. [4] His term was extended by four years in June 2018. [5]
In April 2018,Dijkema was appointed WADA Foundation Board Member representing the winter sports federations and in November 2019,he was appointed by the IOC as a Member of the Coordination Commission for the XXV Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026.
With Dijkema as President,the ISU is focused on three strategic pillars: [6]
Development: a further development of the skating sport worldwide in all ISU disciplines:figure skating,speed skating,short track speed skating and synchronized skating. The aim is to increase the quantity and quality of skaters,coaches and officials worldwide and to increase the number of ISU Members capable to develop skaters who are competitive at ISU Events and the Olympic Winter Games. In 2016,a new and result-oriented Development Program (ISU Communication No. 2052) and a Development Commission were established,focused amongst others on educating coaches and officials via e-learning,encouraging transition from other sports to ice skating,educating talents and the establishment of ISU Centres of Excellence. Marketing and promotion: aimed at increasing the ISU disciplines' global fan base and its engagement. From the start of Dijkema's Presidency,the ISU is building a new fan-centric cross-media strategy,(especially) showcasing the skaters. Another focus is increasing attractiveness of calendar and event formats. An example is the addition of Mixed Gender Relay in short track to the program of the Olympic Winter Games in 2022. [8] Further,Dijkema has been able to create new partnerships with media partners as well as commercial partners.
Good governance: Integrity,transparency,inclusiveness and sustainable development are key values in Dijkema's governance of the skating sport. Furthermore,Dijkema facilitated the installation of the ISU Athletes Commission. "This way,a new generation is getting ready to eventually take over the lead."
Speed skating is a competitive form of ice skating in which the competitors race each other in travelling a certain distance on skates. Types of speed skating are long track speed skating,short track speed skating,and marathon speed skating. In the Olympic Games,long-track speed skating is usually referred to as just "speed skating",while short-track speed skating is known as "short track". The International Skating Union (ISU),the governing body of competitive ice sports,refers to long track as "speed skating" and short track as "short track skating".
Short-track speed skating is a form of competitive ice speed skating. In competitions,multiple skaters skate on an oval ice track with a length of 111.111 metres (364.54 ft). The rink itself is 60 metres (196.85 ft) long by 30 metres (98.43 ft) wide,which is the same size as an Olympic-sized figure skating rink and an international-sized ice hockey rink. Related sports include long track speed skating and inline speed skating.
Long-track speed skating,usually simply referred to as speed skating,is the Olympic discipline of speed skating where competitors are timed while crossing a set distance. It is also a sport for leisure. Sports such as ice skating marathon,short track speedskating,inline speedskating,and quad speed skating are also called speed skating.
The International Skating Union (ISU) is the international governing body for competitive ice skating disciplines,including figure skating,synchronized skating,speed skating,and short track speed skating. It was founded in Scheveningen,Netherlands,in July 1892,making it one of the oldest international sport federations. The ISU was formed to establish standardized international rules and regulations for the skating disciplines it governs,and to organize international competitions in these disciplines. It is now based in Switzerland.
The World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships are a series of speed skating competitions organised by the International Skating Union. The World Single Distances Speed Skating Championships for Men was introduced,also by ISU,in 1996,and has been occurring annually ever since.
Short track speed skating at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics was held at the Pacific Coliseum,Vancouver,British Columbia on 13–26 February 2010.

Lara Victoria van Ruijven was a Dutch short track speed skater. At the 2018 Winter Olympics,she was part of the Dutch 3000 metres relay team that won a bronze medal. She won gold at the World Championships one year later. By doing so,she became the first Dutch woman to win a world short track title at an individual event.
Yara van Kerkhof is a Dutch short track speed skater. She won the silver medal in the 500 m event at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang,South Korea.
Hungary competed at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang,South Korea,from 9 to 25 February 2018. With the men's 5000 metre relay victory in short track speed skating,the nation had won its first ever Winter Olympic gold,and first Winter medal since 1980. Speed skater Jan Smeekens was appointed as flag bearer for the opening ceremony,which was attended by King Willem Alexander,Queen Máxima and Prime Minister Mark Rutte,who also observed the sporting events that featured Dutch competitors.
Suzanne Schulting is a Dutch short track speed skater who is also active as a long track speed skater. At the 2018 Winter Olympics,she won the Netherlands' first-ever gold medal in short track speed skating and became one of the youngest-ever Dutch Winter Olympic champions. She is also a two-time overall World Champion and three-time overall European Champion,and the current world record holder for 1000m.
Lin Xiaojun,born Lim Hyo-jun,is a South Korean-born Chinese short track speed skater. He is the 2018 champion of the Men's 1500 m event in short track speed skating at the Winter Olympics,and also set the new Olympic record for the event. Originally starting as a swimmer,Lim took up skating at a young age. Despite multiple injuries early on in his career,he notably won gold at the 2012 Winter Youth Olympics upon his international debut in the Boys' 1000 m event. He would later win the 1000 m and 1500 m events in the Budapest leg of the 2017–18 ISU Short Track Speed Skating World Cup and earn selection for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. Upon his Olympic debut,Lim won the gold medal,setting a new Olympic record of 2:10.485 in the process,beating Lee Jung-su's previous record set at the 2010 games.

Short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to be held at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing,China. The events are scheduled to take place between 5 and 16 February 2022. A total of nine short track speed skating events will be held.
The men's 5000 m competition in speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 6 February,at the National Speed Skating Oval in Beijing. The event was won by Nils van der Poel of Sweden. Patrick Roest of the Netherlands won the silver medal,and Hallgeir Engebråten of Norway the bronze medal. For van der Poel and Engebråten these are the first Olympic medals. Van der Poel's medal was the first Olympic medal in speed skating for Sweden since 1988,when Tomas Gustafson won both 5000 m and 10000 m.
The mixed 2000 metre relay competition in short track speed skating at the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 5 February,at the Capital Indoor Stadium in Beijing. This will be the first time a mixed short track speed skating event is featured at the Olympics.
